what mechanical works are you doing now that you are locked in your house

Not mechanical, but on the bike theme I've restored two bike lights where time and leaky batteries had destroyed the switches. Soldered on new switches, flowed a few corroded solder points, all good. Surprisingly pleasing! On the skip theme, I rescued a very rusty wheel barrow from a builders...

what mechanical works are you doing now that you are locked in your house

Can you do a how-to write up pls? My driver's door wood strip has a split at the rear, would love to fix rather than replace, but out of my skill zone

    Carbon canister - fuel smells...

I pressure tested the tank and associated pipes at 2psi, as much as I dared as the tank clearly bowed upwards even at this modest pressure Anyway, the tank seals, tank filler cap, vent line, etc held at just over 2psi for two hours, until I got bored and had mercy on the poor inflated tank! I...

    Carbon canister - fuel smells...

Thanks Steve, most parts are new there: new hoses, clamps and sender unit seals last year, plus a recent tank by the previous owner. But the hard line running to the hole by the bumper looks original (although I replaced the short rubber section) and I don't know about the tank cap. What I might...

    Carbon canister - fuel smells...

Well I can check the line again, I did remove the line to check it out last year. My garage smells of fuel, especially near the rear of the car, worse on a hot day. Vapours are getting out down this line, hence the plan to put a carbon canister in the line. Thanks for all of the info re the E3...

    Gas expansion tank

Ah, I may have mis understood. The expansion tank is only needed to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from tank evaporation. The accumulator I was referring to is the cylinder next to the pump under the car. If you have a spare expansion tank and activated carbon canister I'd be interested?

    Gas expansion tank

On my early model E24 I removed the fuel pressure accumulator from the plumbing, with the original pump, and the engine would not run well. With a better pump this may not be an issue Are you putting an in-tank pump in?

    Carbon canister - fuel smells...

cool, thanks for that. I was not aware that E3s had this gear. Is it much bother to deal with? On my E24 this was no bother, and it just sat there in the boot/trunk. Do you have a piccie you could share? Putting E3 parts in the boot would be preferable to random VW parts, however I'm still not...

    Carbon canister - fuel smells...

On our 70s classics the fuel tank has a breather line which vents directly to the atmosphere, just underneath the rear bumper. This is to ensure that the tank can vent (and so not over pressure) on a hot day, and to stop the pump pulling a vacuum when the engine is running, and drawing fuel from...

WTB: 3.0CSi sun visor clips (not hinges)

I used these, which are indistinguishable from the original on a CSL. I've not seen a white equivalent for a CSi howerver https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/9117313310070B-sun-visor-support-clip-black.html

Best rust treatment for crusty wheel arches

just invested in a Bilt Hamber kit. They had a deal on for the de-rust gel, the zinc primer, plus de-greaser. Plus I got some new grinder wheels, etc. Nice to be able to take my time with this, car's not going anywhere any time soon

what mechanical works are you doing now that you are locked in your house

Great thread! And some excellent work CSL now operates on a single key, have rejigged the lock tumblers. I forget how long that has been on the to-list. Also fettled the passengers door handle mech so it no longer touches the window glass. Restored the B12's memory mirror function, a minor...

Best rust treatment for crusty wheel arches

As well as my garaged E9, I also own an E38 Alpina B12. This is not a garage queen but a highway bruiser capable of remarkably effortless long distance mileage. It lives outdoors and is driven in all conditions, but is still a labour of love, just in a different way to my E9. It came to me a bit...

Yes, sorry, I should have been clearer. At idle the timing mark was jumping about a bit. Above idle the timing mark was was steady. Was thinking the lash in the dizzy drive gearing might be the cause

    Distributor rebuild options

Took the CSL out for a hoon yesterday. Well I'd backed it out of the garage to spring clean, so I couldn't really put it away without running the engine warm, could I? Not sure everyone would consider that "necessary".... o_O With the leaky vac retard unit disconnected (and the line plugged) it...
