Book at the printers now Thanks folks. The book actually went out to the printers early this week, so we should be on target for the June 27th pub date. That's what I know.

    Wipers: Mechanical and Electrical

I was hurt by my wiper motor as well I'm late to the party, but add me to the list of people who's hand was pinned to the sharp metal on the cowl when I plugged in the wiper plug and the armature swing around. Not something to be treated lightly.

    Alternator question

internally regulated is simply more reliable To give a blatant plug to my new book, "The Hack Mechanic's Guide to European Automotive Electrical Systems" (available for pre-order from www.bentleypublishers.com, use the coupon code "FriendOfRob" for 35% off list), I have a chapter about...

    Air condition installation help

The hardest piece is... As Twistinglane said, there's a lot of info in my book (see my signature), but it's general information about retrofitting a/c into a vintage car. I did a full a/c retrofit on my '73 CSi. Long story short: --Buy an original evaporator assembly (they're around, and...

    Vehicle shipment company experiences?

Intercity as well I also used Intercity, to ship my dead Lotus when I bought it sight-unseen in Chicago. For enclosed, point-to-point, air-ride shipping (which I wanted with a dead fiberglass car), they had the best price. Their communication left a lot to be desired, but I would try them again.

My New Book "The Hack Mechanic Guide to European Automotive Electrical Systems"

Steve, no, The Sheriff has left the building Steve, I LOVE that you remember Sheriff Johnson! Sadly, no; he does not make an appearance in this book. (Though, in retrospect, perhaps he should have; there are chapters on vintage ignition, and the points in The Sheriff did close up in east Texas.)

My New Book "The Hack Mechanic Guide to European Automotive Electrical Systems"

Thanks again! Thanks again, folks. Amy (coupelady), no, unfortunately the book won't be published until the end of June, so I won't have them at The Vintage. Just my hackneyed tired old "Memoirs," that I will be glad to sign in motor oil, blood, Redline MTL, or all three!

    5 speed swap solutions

Yes, a Getrag 245 and a shortened shifter platform and driveshaft Peter: To install a 5-speed in a 2002, you need: --A Getrag 245 from a 1980 to 1982 E21 320i. The '83 320i has a Getrag 240, which is not as good a candidate as the 245. Unfortunately, 245s are now increasingly rare, as the...

My New Book "The Hack Mechanic Guide to European Automotive Electrical Systems"

Wow... thanks Wow, guys, Peter, Simon, Ohmess, rsporsche, alfagt, hope I didn't miss anyone, thanks so much. Ohmess, the book does have a detailed chapter on the charging system, including "vintage" systems like on the E9 with external regulators, but I am not aware of any kluge that...

My New Book "The Hack Mechanic Guide to European Automotive Electrical Systems"

Any Kluges? Simufly, yeah, a couple. This IS more of a real repair manual, with the accompanying legal ramifications, so I can't say "go ahead, put that penny in the fusebox, everything will work out fine," but there are a few good workarounds. There's a VERY thorough chapter on understanding...

    5 speed swap solutions

As I'm reading Don's very detailed post, I'm realizing that I can rattle off the top of my head every part to do a 5-speed conversion on a 2002, but I don't, in fact, know how it was done on my 3.0CSi. Why not? As I'm thinking back, it was done 25 years ago when I had more disposable income. I...

    advice on air conditioning pump

Mark: The issue is that the Sanden compressors and their Chinese clones need an adapter bracket to bolt to the M30 block. These brackets used to be readily available through the aftermarket, but the supply has all but dried up. I looked into this a while back. There's a long thread here...

Question 1975 CSI advice needed please

Recommend a back-to-front fuel system sort-out Andy, if the car is a barn-find and sat dormant for many years, and if the car fires up with starting fluid, it means you have spark but not fuel. I'd strongly recommend performing a back-to-front fuel-system sort-out. Open up the gas tank by...

    A/C question

Michael, I actually do follow my own advice :^). If you're a BMW CCA member and read my "Hack Online" pieces in Roundel Weekly, you'll see next Tuesday that I just went through this on my E30, pulled the hoses off the compressor, found them coated with rust, blew out the condenser and saw powder...

    A/C question

Michael, the single longest chapter in my book is about air conditioning retrofit and rejuvenation. Basically, any time you open up an a/c system, you need to replace the receiver-drier so the system has fresh desiccant to remove moisture. Then, as Bill says, it's a question of exactly what...
