I've wondered that also. They're are many two-piece driveshaft assemblies out there and the ones I've seen in person are more robust. The one I put on the E3 must've been faulty or old "new old stock".
I bought the center bearing Rich replaced for about $30-40 and a few hours of work and it lasted about 300 miles before the rubber cracked and fell apart. The $250 bearing looks pretty good now.
It looked that way. The bottom third of the door was packed full. Didn't seem to cause additional rust but the truck has been in CA for the past 12+ years so that helps.
