    Back up lights CSA

Haven't looked at it in a while, but it's been well and repeatedly documented that rear lights or lack thereof can frequently be traced to failure of the copper bus bar (ground for rear lights IIRC) to receive power through the steel rivets on the bulb socket. Galvanic corrosion impedes current...

Removal Question. Surround around the shifter

I've see gaiters (e.g., shift boot or around the handbrake) secured with a metal wire in them that closely matches the opening they are intended for and so they can be popped in/out, OR the shifter boot stapled to the horizontal section of the visible platform. To magnetize a screwdriver (at no...

    195/70R14

My '79 635CSi came with TRX tires but I didn't keep it long enough to get in trouble. My '83 533i came with TRX tires that didn't grip worth sh*t in the wet. Thankfully I sold it before the tires got more bald and the crank position sensor went on vacation. I wouldn't have known what to do...

    Front disc/rotor noise

Brake shoes (in the rear) are adjustable but it's often the case that the adjustment bolt is very tight. Prepare the bolt with some of your favorite penetrating lube. Only an open end wrench will fit on the bolt head b/c the clearance to the shock mount is too small for (most) box wrenches...

    The 1969 BMW 2800 GTS / Frua

Not unusual at all for a designer to copy elements from one commission to another. If a creative has something "that works", expect it to show up elsewhere.

    Lost the clutch

Had a difficult problem with another person's bimmer - evenutally it was discovered that the piston in the clutch slave was stuck in the fully depressed condition. You'd have to disassemble the clutch slave to assess this, or know from experience how much of the clutch actuating rod should be...

    Mystery ignition issue

Have similar problem, car not started/run frequently. Key to position 2, get only a click: solenoid engaging, thrusting pinion gear into ring gear, but not successfully activating starter. Repeated attempts get the engine turning over (solenoid successfully powers the starter). Removed...

How to route a hose that carries nothing?

Thomas76, post #3 above, and Mike Goble in #7, there will only be loss if there is flow. In lines where there is negligible flow, there is negligible loss, e.g., vacuum line from carb to distributor. For me, vacuum or pressure hose, the shorter the better, less to go wrong, get in the way or...

Parts ordering / project planning question

I'm with Ohmess, post #3 above "There is no way to ensure you order all the parts you need in advance of starting a project." Something always comes up, unless it's a job I've done before, or I'm replacing a very specific part and only the replacement for that part(s) is/are needed...

    Current BaT Auction Car Question

Tough crowd! Pics 72 and 73, is the fan mounted the correct way? Looks as if the blades curve the wrong way. I'm too lazy to go look at mine just now.

    Intermittent Ignition switch

(snicker) I put a pushbutton starter switch in my '67 VW Squareback after one key was stolen and the other went missing, and a toggle switch to energize the ignition. One more thing, when I first connected the pushbutton switch, the starter ran continuously. I had to do some minor surgery...

Possible to remove the speedometer without deposit the dashboard ?

No need to disturb the dash, the work is all within the instrument cluster wood surround. Take out the clock first. Remove the lower dashboard panel, reach up from below and unscrew two knurled nuts, rotate clock about 1/8 turn (it will only rotate one way) and remove to the interior of the...

Wood steering wheel recommendations for my manual steering E9?

I have the pictured Nardi also. Comment: the edges of the spokes are not "sharp" but will be very unpleasant on a car without power steering. I had a 1969 2500 (E3) sedan without power and it was ... unpleasant. A person of modest ability can get a strip of leather and use a hammer, nail...

I've got Wood (veneer) let me see yours

I have the following observation about solid wood warping when exposed to humidity/heat... Years ago my kids' school replaced their chalkboards with whiteboards and the chalk rails that ran along the bottom of the chalkboards were removed and discarded. They were essentially 2x6x10-foot long...

    Coolant leak

Second the nomination of the water pump. There is a small hole on the underside of the shaft housing that seems to be there expressly to function as an indicator that the internal seal is failing, allowing a small drip to fall to the floor. It's the first place I'd look. Be aware that the...

Steering Boxes. Who has had both? (Manual, Power)

Decades ago I had a '69 2500 (E3) with manual steering, in town it was... an exercise. The steering lightened up considerably when I replaced the front tires. I got a PS unit but never installed it, sold it with the car.

Which OE parts for E9/E3 worth to be purchased at BMW Dealership directly

I'd buy glass from a dealer so that if it arrived damaged, I can reject delivery at no loss.

    5 digit odometer

CSteve has it right. I've owned 30 bimmers and to me it's not the mileage, it's whether the sale price is adequately supported by the visual and tactile condition of the car. If something's broke, I accept it and/or I'll fix it, but live with it either way.
