Layne, you are correct. It is the compressive stress on the surface being blasted the causes warpage. It actually make the blasted surface longer causing to want to arc. The thinner the sheet metal the worse the warping.

It seems powder coating would produce a similar result. I don't know how difficult it would be to powder coat specific areas that would be need to do the Roundels.

The ignition switch typically sends power to a relay or solenoid that in turns connects the battery to the starter. The relay or solenoid can stick causing the starter to keep going. Check the wire going to the relay to see if it is still sending current when not in the start position.
