Not sure about e28s but on e24s you could either Recaros or Sport Seats (and, of course, comfort seats). My first euro e24 (1984) had Recaros, and my new one (1985) has Sport Seats. They are both great seats.

I don't want to steer anyone away from an e39 or e46 touring, I love them - we've had 3 e39 wagons and one e46 wagon. But, as others have said, they are getting to be older cars now. Something else to consider, we came very close to buying a VW Golf Alltrack in 2018 but my wife decided on her...

For me, it strictly for the looks. I think any rear wheel drive performance car looks better with a staggered set up. Also, our e9s have a narrower track in the rear which drives me a little crazy so a wider lip in the rear helps fill that gap from an esthetics standpoint. That's just me...
