That is a good point about the 1157 bulb. I knew the 1157 nubs were offset to prevent it from being installed incorrectly. I saw somewhere that 1157 could be used in a 1156 application and overlooked that important fact.
You are right about the taillights being lower wattage which result in...
I ended up using Super Bright LED bulbs. The 1156 with BA155 base worked perfectly for the brake lights. The 67LED bulb -12 LED tower worked perfectly for the taillights. I like that it has a glass bulb over the LEDs.
The standard 1156 LED bulb did not work for the turn signals. The base fit...
I am also a long-term Coupe owner. I bought my 70 2800 CS in Jan 1980. It was my daily driver for many years and is still my weekend driver today. It also served duty on several racetracks with quite a few BMW high speed driving schools with BMW ACA. It has been a very reliable car for the...
When I used the 1157 LED for the combination taillight, turn signal and brake light, I had no change in the flash frequency of the turn signal. I did not use LED for the front turn signal and that may have helped with not needing the electronic flasher mod. There is also a resistor kit that...
Chris, all of my bulbs are single filament. I know 1157 dual filament serves as both taillight and brake light. I use those in my Fairlane Cobra. I also understand you can use a dual filament bulb in a single filament application. Is there an advantage of doing that? My taillight is a...
I have used LED taillights from Super Brite LEDs in another vintage car and would like to do the same in my 2800 CS. I have run into some difficulties with bulb numbers. Super Brite LEDS lists 5007 for the taillights and 7528 for the parking lights. They have no listing for the brake lights...
I have one that I bought for my 70 2800CS but it was not the correct one for my car. I will compare it to your photo to see if it looks correct for your 73.
I owned a 67 2000CS 6 years before I got my 70 2800CS. I very much liked the 2000CS, but I think the longer font end of the later E9s look more balanced visually. The 2000CS liked cornering better but even with the strong 4-cylinder engine it lacks the power and smoothness of the E9 six.
I...
I have a 215/60-14 tire as a spare. It does lift the cover (trunk floor) a little, but it is higher less than 1/4 inch compared to the rest of the trunk floor and not difficult to live with.
In my 32 years of racing with SCCA, I have never experienced a perfectly smooth racetrack. Sometimes they are worse than roads.
I am very familiar with how changes in suspension affects handling. I would not want to drive a race car on the street as a road car. That would be very...
That was back in the 80s. I don't remember the model of the Pirelli tires, but I think it was something new Pirelli was trying and was not successful. I by no means am implying all Pirelli tires are bad.
The BFG TA radials were the same size, 215/60-14.
I used to run my Coupe on many tracks with BMW ACA high speed driving schools. Over the years I tried various sizes and brands. My best combination was with Yokohama 215/60 in the front and 225/60 in the rear. The worst was 205/60 Pirelli on...
I have never felt degradation in handling by going to wider tires. I know you can go too wide for the width of the wheel, but 215 on 6" wheel works very well. Right now, I am running Riken which is not a great tire because it has very soft side walls. I have to run higher tire pressure to get...
I run 215/60-14 tires on stock wheels on all four corners. It works just fine. Many years ago, I ran 225/60 tires on the rear, and it was ok but a fairly close fit. Once they wore out, I went to what I have now. I like that look even if it not the original size.
