Yesterday I ran into a restored car being sold that was rallied in South America and is presumably a factory rally delivery designated Alpina Ti. It has Weber 40 sidedrafts, flared body, some strange fuel tank in the trunk, cage, five speed Alpina transmission, and 170 advertised horses. Full documented provenance including driver testimony.

I know little about 2002 models. Is this a car somebody may want to wear for the Monterey venue in August?

I took some pictures and have the contact info for the seller.

i wonder how many of those horses have left the stable? these engines tweaked to that extreme don't always hang onto all of them ... they tend to wear out and have several wander off over the years.

Ok I sense some negative vibes here, I will upload some positive energy and pictures. Just somebody say if this is an interesting car or not.

If it's a1970 they modified quite a few things: 12 fuses, no brackets on fender for Ti airbox, snorkel in radiator wall (not sure on this one), later brake/clutch reservoir. It's easy to claim a car is an Alpina, quite another thing to prove it!

It is my guess that this is not an authentic 2002Ti. As Chris mentioned, many inconsistencies. Regarding the snorkel nose, I owned a 1970 2002Ti that had the original nose, no snorkel. In fact, in every respect except the Kugelfischer injection, it was a Tii. Same front struts with big brakes, boxed rear trailing arms, brackets for the airbox, etc. It is easy to see how BMW created the 2002Tii for the US market.

As for this car, if the price assumes any premium for the Alpina and/or Ti provenance I would be skeptical. If the price reflects a modified 02 with some interesting race bits, that's another story.

Interesting. Needs research, it could be real and could be a nice tribute. Gas tank is very interesting.

Those flares don't look like Alpina flares or 'pig cheeks' or Turbos.. Sorta have smaller scale Grp2 look.'

Wonder if it was built by a SA Alpina dealer/importer, similar to the English firms or H&B in Berkeley.

Go poke it with a stick and see what it does.

Where is the VIN in the 2002s?

The paperwork shows a VIN of 1775104 which is a local CKD for a late 1969 1600. Strange.

The restoration pictures from a shell look pretty good. That was two years ago.

The narrative is that the car won a couple of track races but with arrival of more powerful 2002s in 71 (30 more horses) the car was repurposed in 73 for rally. The mechanical director of the firm and pilot was Generoso Torres and the car was the official car for competition. Ran six times the 19 capitales and won in 73. Presumably was also piloted later on by Lucho Etchegoyen whose narratives are at:

Any more digging needed or can I go back to surfing the Atlantic?

1775104 is before VIN 1775111 which is the first 1970 2002, not a Ti, that was built for Uruguay. Even CKD cars would fit into the normal BMW VIN ranges. 640 of these were built through 1973. Again, something in this story doesn't make any sense.

Edit: just found that 110 CKD 1600 were built for Uruguay in 1969, and 58 in 1968, again not a Ti so 1775104 is a 1600 most likely built in late 1969.
