1970 2800 cs in MD

For sale in May 2010 on eBay, starting bid $7000. My favorite quote from that ad, "small spots of rust starting in a few areas.". Now that's an understatement!

I looked at this car a couple of months ago. When I first saw the ad it listed for $7995. From a suspension and steering standpoint it drove pretty well. The carbs looked new, but it would backfire through the intake if you went beyond 1/3 throttle. Plenty of rust in the inner fenders. The bumpers looked great and I think the front seats had been redone.

Backfire through the carbs means way lean... vacuum leaks, low fuel level, etc or /and bad timing.

Maine tags, salty roads, even tools have cancer. I'd bet heavy money rockers are shot. Scenario 1-Have fun, drive it into the dirt for a couple years, and end up with a parts car. Scenario 2- Spend 45K and you can have a beautiful 30K car.

Very Scary Rust

Hey, it has two red handled screwdrivers - that alone is worth the $6K.

So true !

If I would like to do "Scenario 1-Have fun, drive it into the dirt for a couple years, and end up with a parts car" what would you pay for the car.
Was listed for $5995, but would think more like $4k, or better yet offer $3,500 and see what happens.
What do you think?

I would suggest seeing it in person check the one in califonia I found

So much depends on "Hows".......

-How much do you want an e9?
-How crazy are you?(Almost same question as above)
-How patient are you?(Again, I repeat myself))
-How little can you afford to pay?
-How long do you want to drive it for?
-How much is that ugly rust going to bother you, not to mention the thought of how much is underneath?
-How safe is the car? (has rust compromised suspension and/or other critical components?)

It's been repeated ad nauseum on this site, and couldn't be more true- Buy as much coupe as you can afford. Fixing a problem on an e9 is always more costly than buying one without, unless you can do it yourself and don't assign a value to your blood, sweat and.....

You need to inspect the car and drive it. If you think it will last a couple years, it might be worth $3K or more (for the cost of enjoying it for that length of time). That's up to you. This car will either need BIG money soon, or will end up passing on tidbits to luckier siblings.

On a more positive note, you could turn this into the absolutely coolest rat rod ever....flat black, rust holes, stitched in patch panels. I'd paypal you $20 right now, if you promised to chop the top by at least 2 inches and eventually send a photo. If you got enough peeps to join me, you might end up with enough to put in an LS1. Let us know.

Best of luck!

Very well said Ed G! I too would love to see someone chop an rusty e9 into a Rat Rod,no bumpers,no ground clearance and flat black! At an auction I saw a 1952 Chevy P/U Ratted and sold for 28K. Don't figure?
