Looking to upgrade the clutch/fan assembly on my 2800CS as I prepare to get it back on the road. I've read thorough about a dozen or more threads and they all seem to spiral off.

Can anyone confirm that an E28 535i fan/clutch/water pump combo will be a direct fit onto my E9. I understand the pulley may come into account. Will the original pulley be compatible?

I understand moving to the E28 gets you the large 32mm nut, which is what I am used to anyways.

Why would you stop at the fan clutch for the e28? It wasn’t good enough for BMW - the e32 fan clutch was the last and best.
 
my advice is to take the words of @sfdon as the best advice.
cooling v3 = e28 (waterpump, fan clutch, fan and fan shroud
cooling v4 = e32 (fan clutch + fan - no shroud needed) and i believe the e28 waterpump is still the same ... i could be wrong. the only issue is that the fan with the ring around it is from the diesel engines and is hard to get in the USA unless you order it from the EU and pay the tariffs. i got mine from W+N and avoided the tariffs.

i have found the fan clutches on several of the websites like fcpeuro, rmeuropean + autohausaz ... the BMW part is very expensive, the Behr part seems to be more reasonable

yes, but you order a lot of things from the EU ... i have added your previous version (v3) for those that do not want to go thru the trouble to get the 7 blade fan (which is what i am using). FYI, BMW NA does not sell the 7 blade fan in the USA ... and i haven't found any for sale by the aftermarket. i bought mine from W+N before the tariffs affected things - they had the best price.
