I bought this 1972 CSi in LA 3 weeks ago for under $9K
Your car looks like a nice car and $5,000 is too low but your car still needs many thousands of dollars of work... Also a propane conversion on this car means lots of extra large holes for lines and other mods were done that need undoing... I would love to see E9 values skyrocket because I own (4) of them see photos. The most expensive one I bought during the past year was $15,000... The CSi is probably worth more because it has more power but they also have the "Being European" models and therefore "Rusty" stigma. And most CSi dont have Leather Seats, Power Windows, Air etc so they might be and probably are harder to sell...
Also remember it aint a CSL! Then this would be a totally different story.
So you understand I bought this 1972 CSi (1st Dark blue photo) here in LA in late December for under $9k ( I scored) and it has virtually no rust and the car runs and drives great. The car is far from perfect but it already has 70% of the restoration work done and again I can drive it.
Then in SF (your neighborhood) on Ebay about 6 months was ago another 72 CSi that car was about 90% restored (also a Fjord car like yours) and the high bid/selling price was $22,800.
I have been restoring Porsches, MBs, Ferraris etc for many years and I also do some of the work myself. Trust me Restoration costs for even just a nice driver are very expensive. I think you already know this and that is why you are forced to sell. You have done the easy stuff but the very expensive and complicated repairs still need to be done.
Remember all repair shops are charging $70-$130 per hour and even a simple job on a 40 year old car with rust takes extra time. Watch as your mechanic tries to remove something that should take 10 minutes to R/R turn into a 2-3 hour job because of rusty bolts that break off that need to be drilled out and re-tapped. That 10 minute job could cost you $200-$300... Been there Done that!
Here are the basic costs for things that you agree that are required. You might get it done cheaper then what I have listed but believe me it will look a lot cheaper and end up costing even more to redo correctly.
Considering that a metal man would easily charge $2,000 parts and labor for the rust we can see and there will be more hidden rust after he starts taking things apart. Then a minimum of $7,000 for stripping and painting the car. You say the windshield is cracked with a new rubber that is around $600. Fuel injection issues because the idle is random... $500 labor plus easily $500-$1000 in parts (one injector is $220 and there are 6! a used D-Jet brain is $1,000). You say the brakes need work add another $500 parts/labor. Electrical issues with the windows and a new door glass OOPS there goes another $500...
Interior needs work figure $1,000-$2,000 to freshen up if it is usable (nice door panels no cracks in the dash etc) or $6,000 for a new leather interior with a new headliner. Then you have chrome, rubber seals, trim etc etc etc... $3,000-$4,000...
Then a Propane conversion car? If the engine, trans, clutch, shocks, suspension need any minor work... Better include another $2,000-$3,000 because the car is 40 years old and was sitting for a reason.
CSi Wheels and tires $2,000
So to restore your car to be a very nice driver is going to cost around $18,000-$20,000 plus a least a year and then you will be in it thousands more then it is worth now.... Hopefully the market will change but today you will be buried.
