Guys, with a heavy heart I am putting up my CSL for sale.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1972-BMW-...Project-Very-Rare-Motoring-Icon-/251396711197

I've not been very active on here at all, it was always a dream to post up the restoration project and pics on these forums but life got in the way.

This is going to be live on eBay UK at 7.45pm Thursday 5th Dec 2013 for a 10 day auction, with a reserve.

Here's the start of the eBay ad
The Capri Beater | The Batmobile | The car that created 'M'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_E9#3.0CSL
Considered to be in the Top Ten of all time most beautiful cars ever built.
The BMW E9 3.0CSL is a fantastic machine.

This particular example is 299 out of 500 made RHD for the UK.
VIN# 2285299 in Taiga Green with UK city pack, half leather Scheel sport seats and wood interior. 3003cc fuel injected straight 6, 4 speed manual, rear wheel drive. Majestic.
An extremely reluctant sale here Ladies and Gentlemen.
After a failed business opportunity I need to give up the BMW E9 to someone that as the time, money and wisdom to see this beautiful car restored to its former glory. I am hoping someone out there will take special care and give this motoring icon the attention it deserves.
What is the E9 valued at, as of June 12? > http://www.practicalclassics.co.uk/images/jun12Priceguide.pdf

 • Condition 3: £13,750
 • Condition 2: £22,000
 • Condition 1: £37,500
 • Concourse: £47,500
There are few UK 3.0CSL examples selling well in north of £55,000, if you were to ever sell on. Batmobile CSL with race kit sell in excess of £100,000.

If you were to do the restore work yourself consider your costs to be roughly £10,000-£12,000 after shell chemical dip, rebuild, a variety of body repairs, new body panels, new fuel tank, new exhaust and full professional respray. Although it could be done for a lot less.
Surface processing for cars > http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/for-cars.html
Parts for Classic BMW E9 from www.Jaymic.com in Norwich
or Walloth Nesch in Germany (who race E9's) > http://www.wallothnesch.com/angebote/quartalsangebote/q2/bmw-2-5-cs-3-0-csl-e9.html
What’s required, in my opinion
Full ground up restoration. This car deserves to be restored to beyond factory condition.
Chemical dip at Surface Processing or equivalent

 • rust repair to just about every component except aluminium doors, boot and bonnet
 • engine bay repair
 • fuel tank and rebuild of fuel line to engine
 • exhaust system upto engine manifold
 • struts, rails and rockers
 • rear quarter panels and arches
 • drivers side front floor panel, hole in floor
 • rebuild brake pipe system
 • damage repair on front end, skin only not structural
 • new rubber seals around door, rear glass and engine bay
 • door locks
The car is complete with all parts interior and exterior. Seat Head rests and all interior trim complete. Chrome wheel arch exterior trim (although not shown in photos)
Door locks will be required, the key is only for ignition, boot and interior locking glove box. There is no AM/FM radio, both missing key for door locks and radio are as the car came to me. These can be picked up on forums such as http://www.e9coupe.com
The engine will fire up and go into gear, both engine and transmission are bullet proof. Brake assembly is off the vehicle and fuel tank disconnected, so no test drives.

Also comes with:

 • Full set of brand new Stainless Steel Brake pipes
 • Full BMW Workshop Build Manuals for E9 x 2 (original and photocopy in workshop binders)
 • Parts Catalogue in Binder from Walloth Nesch. That has every component with fitting sequence in an exploded view.
 • Owners Manual for CS/CSi and Owners Manual Supplement for CSL
 • A variety of magazines with the E9 featured.
I thought I'd give the lovers of E9 a heads-up, I don't want to sell the old girl. I always wanted to drive this around the Highlands and Europe but needs must. It would be great if one of you guys could take this over, it could be a fantastic opportunity for some one that has the time.

I can not let this old girl rot any further. It just would not be right.

The body is UK rust ready and a bit rough but worth it for this girl. Rear quarters will be required and some extensive rust repair over most of the car.

Live on eBay here

cool car...

i have a taiga csl also...love it. Before I started my restoration I'd say it was in much better shape with interior and engine really pretty nice and rust very limited to rockers and a little at rear wheel wells. Anyway, the point is...I'd say 10-12,000 pounds is unrealistic unless you can do it yourself...full metal/aluminum rust repair was more than double your estimate in my case. But good luck and I hope someone takes it on and brings it back full glory.

I'll be sorry to see my Taiga CSL go, but needs must and it deserves a loving home.
I did say DIY it would be 10-12k sterling but yes if someone did it for you, you'll not get much change out of 30k. I had intended to take a couple of courses.
Thanks for the good wishes, I just hope it goes to someone that will tentatively restore to better than factory.
Thanks again.

Are there any photos of the inner wings and front bulkhead from inside the car?
I'll be taking some tomorrow to the best of ability.

Any other areas while I am there?
__________
Edit: added some pics of bulkhead from inside glove box and inside wings top fenders in engine bay

I love that colour - i'd budget on at least 1000 hours for the resto though.

Looking at the last photos I would say its top end on eBay already. Good luck with it but it's too far gone for me - I've been through that pain before!

" someone that will tentatively restore to better than factory"

I think that (tentatively) will apply to the bidding! I'm highest bidder at the mo and noticed that someone had placed and retracted a bid of £14k this morning and hadn't reached the reserve and only increased the bidding to £8850 before retracting.

As was mentioned earlier, a 1000 hours of work if your lucky, which if you were able to do 10 hrs a week, equates to 2 years hard labour!

On top of that, you have the cost of the outer panels that need replacing plus the sub structure (floors, inner wings, 3 piece sills etc) which if you can't show have been done properly, will never realise the kind of values that are being mentioned.

I'm undecided as to how much I am willing to pay, just as CSL is no doubt unsure of what he can realistically expect to get.

I certainly won't be going anywhere near the reserve that wasn't reached with the bogus bid earlier. Maybe CSL can name and shame them.

Man that's bad. mine was absolutely no where as rough.
I know what I've spent, and it's been a lot.
If you're going to be paying people and not doing the work yourself it will cost megabucks. I guess depending on what level of result you want, but I would think there wouldn't be any change out of £80k to make that car at least an 8/10.

Guys, goodness. With respect to you all here (that are battle hardened with E9's and know the problems)

Gentlemen, 3 words = Labour. Of. Love.
It's a 3.0CSL in Taiga, I mean c'mon?!

You're talking about resto hours like it's a bad thing, trying to justify 1000 hours over 2 years. It is what it is... someone, possibly here, may just enjoy the process of restoration.

The cost of materials and processes, as I said 10-12k if you do it yourself. Only putting out for chemical dip and final respray. 30k, if someone else does it for you. You could spend 80k on it, if you were tricking it out maybe with a M5 engine, 5spd, new diff, new suspension and whatever else blows up your kilt!

So you get it dipped, what happens ~ you find more work to do. We all know this. I personally was greatly looking forward to labouring over every single panel and taking as long as it took. But I'm just funny that way.

Yes you can get stupid and threw the cheque book at it but if you were keeping stock (and YOU will be keeping her stock, right)?! There is no need to spend that amount of money. I will say that this CSL will go through an MOT with primer on at about £2000 in materials. But of course what is most important is the quality of the restoration.

I'm 'preaching to the converted' and 'teaching Granny to suck eggs' here, so to speak, please excuse.

All relevant points... well, I'm not going to name and shame but the reserve should of hit at that retracted bid of 14k. It was possibly a mistake (clears throat) but it was cancelled within 30 secs, so...
To be transparent, I have a sensible, and more than reasonable reserve on the Taiga for £13.5k

I already have had words with a few people and told them this also, I'm not going to play games...

What I will say is this, whatever the final agreed sale price is, it will still be a steal to the potential buyer. It's a CSL, an appreciating asset.

Man, I'm bummed I need to sell the girl... but I ain't in any hurry for someone to steal this me!

If anybody wants to talk, please send me a PM and we'll swap numbers.

Cheers all, Greg

Greg,
Hopefully you didn't take offence at my post but please do take my comments in the manner they are written - I do genuinely wish you all the best with it! I was sincerely interested in buying this but for me there just isn't enough left in that shell. Posting openly on the form you had to expect peoples views as a by product of the publicity though..
Cheers

No of course I didn't take offence, none at all. Not at all.

Of course my intent was to post openly on here and with that, potentially open myself up to some flak, as it where. However, it is sincerely with the hope an enthusiast will take her on and restore this girl to former glory.

I would rather sell for less here on e9coupe to you guys, than to some blunderbuss poser that will bodge her.

For you too much polaris, I hear you. But as you know all parts are available whether its struts, rails, sections, floor pans or body panels. So it will take some time, money, bit of wisdom, alot of blood sweat and tears.

She's worth it. #299

Thanks again for your comments.

Cheers.

Greg's car

Please spare a thought for those, such as I, who have and probably one day will again effectively subsidise the cost of restoring such a fine car by throwing their own time and money into such a project out of a sense of duty/loyalty/affection towards the marque. Irrational, altruistic, stupid maybe but that is how it is. As regards the numbers themselves I tend to agree with Polaris. My wife never fails in telling all our friends how I "wasted nearly £1827.60 over 30 months on that old wreck which had been sitting in the garage for over 40 years. Do you know, he took it to a place where they diipped it in acid or something and spoiled all that nice blue paint and then he had to have it painted all over again. I can't think what he would do if he had £35000 to waste?" Go figure, as they say. Best wishes, John
