As advised by a few forum members, I have started this thread to document my journey of recommisioning my bmw 3.0csa and to gain the knowledge and expertise from the forum.
I do have basic mechanical knowledge and I have swapped out engines, replaced brakes, replaced gearboxes and have serviced cars but this is my first recommisioning.
The BMW has been off the road for 25years and the car was inherited by the previous owners son/grandson. The original keys had been lost and entry was only possible through drilling out the door lock.
The previous owner did have a new barrel and key installed.
The first issue I have come across is a non starting issue.
The car was fitted with a 90's Immobiliser, connected the + side of the coil, which I have now removed. I have studied the wiring diagrams and I am confident the wiring is as it should be.
The car does turn over, only after I have grounded the starter relay. Also the car will not turn over when using the key, it turns over with a screw driver directly on the metal portion of the removed ignition switch. Thus I assume the ignition barrel is worn.
With ignition on and points open I am getting 12v at the + end of the coil and when the points are closed I am getting approximately 7v at the + end of the coil. The ignition system is ballasted.
Upon cranking the voltage at the +side of the coil drops to approximately 4v.
I have consulted a lucas manual and it suggests the starter solenoid is at fault.
Upon cranking there is only approximately 4-6v being provided by the 12 of clock output of the starter solenoid.
I have tested the resistance of the coil and it is within spec.
When running a 12v feed directly from the battery to the coil I am getting a healthy spark and the engine is firing.
Now before I take the starter motor out, to get it rebuilt. Is there anything else you would suggest I should check which may be causing my no spark issue?
