1973 E( Speedo cable replacement

Happy almost NY.

In process of replacing the speedo cable not sure of the correct process got it disconnected form speedo but cannot see form inside car where its exist the firewall can see it below the coolant tank outside. Does this require removal of the center counsel under the steering wheel? Does the cable have to be removed via pulling thru from inside? Advice appreciated.

As I remember on my e3 I removed it from the inside. And replacing it from the inside with the lower steering cover removed.

What happened to it? I ask because I had a 73 Mercury Capri years ago, buggered cable which had enough slack that I was able to cut the end off, clean it up square and reuse it.
 
I say this with 90% surety that you know this already but just in case, you can pull the cluster out en toto enough to reach back with your hand, it's a PIA and my hand is not small, but doable. Speaker grill off, speaker pulled out, single screw under the grill.

1. The speedo cable from an auto trans will work with the 4-speed or the 5-speed, as I've done in my two trans conversions.

2. You can 1) reach up to the back (actually forward side) of the speedo from underneath, after taking off the lower trim, and unscrew the sleeve that secures the speedo cable to the speedo head, OR 2) you can reach up from underneath and loosen the two nuts holding the clock to the wood instrument surround, then remove the clock into the passenger compartment. Once that's done. the two nuts holding the speedo can be removed. This gives an opportunity to mess with the clock, which frequently needs the attention.

Either way, it's not a job for 2xl hands, AMHIK.
 
Dealing with an E3 or E9? My comment is for the E3, E9 another level of complexity.
 
All good advice Thanks! Had to remove the trim under the steering wheel to get enough room to position the attaching ring. Got it installed resulting in sore fingers. The cable assy. must be removed through the inside of vehicle I used a wire snake attached to the old assy. to pull the new assy. thru the fire wall.
