1973 Gas Tank Cleaning vs. Replacing

I pulled out the gas tank for the 1973 CSi I am restoring. Full of rust and varnish from 20 years of sitting. Seems that there are few to no radiator shops that clean and seal gas tanks anymore in the Nashville area. The only one I found wanted 3 weeks and $400 to do it.

Does anyone recommend trying to clean and seal it myself or know of someone I can send it to that does good work reasonably?

Or any leads on a replacement tank? My understanding is the tank that fits my car was only in the 72 and 73 cars. Anyone know if that tank used in the E3 or any other models?

Thanks in advance!

The tank is unique to the 3.0CS.

If you can rent a steam cleaner or pressure washer you could have a go at cleaning it yourself.

+1 for the POR15 products.

+2 with POR-15. Just so you know, they have a 3 stage kit that cleans, neutralizes the rust, and seals gas tanks. I've used them twice (on different tanks) and have had no problems in 10 years.

I am not positive but I think the fuel tank for the CSI differs slightly in depth from the CS which means the sending unit might also need to be replaced for proper fuel pick up if you end up replacing tanks.
