I have the possibility of buying an engine out of a ninety 535i with a 5 speed, would that be a good choice  for a conversion into my coupe ? I plan to run the original engine for a while so if there’s a better choice I can certainly wait. Any pointers or suggestions, both good and or bad are much appreciated --- sheet metal and body work are my thing, not injected engines. Thank you :) ~ John Buchtenkirch

The engine is a fine choice (Motronic 1.3 M30B35) but the 5 speed is not exactly optimal, as it lacks a mechanical speedo drive. You would also need a modified motor mount plate to compensate for some block mounting differences with the B35 vs the older versions. Carl Nelson sells them or you should be able to make one with a minimum of fuss.

Thanks for the help. I just didn’t want to get involved and find out that particular year or whatever is the one everyone is avoiding. I’m not going to buy the 5 speed with the engine (I already have a 265 Getrag in my car), I just mentioned that because I thought it might be an advantage to have the computer from a standard shift car. ~ John Buchtenkirch

There is no difference in the ECU between automatic and manual transmission cars. If you have a G265 already, you are in good shape. The m30b35 is an excellent engine and will provide a significant improvement. Sounds fun!
