Hi

Looking in my album, I found this pix, already posted-- but so cool.. of an assembly line .
They are so rare....

It shows one answer to a question about backing fender grilles ...
and shows a third type of mirror fitted on very early E9 (Flag or trap).

Thanks for sharing Marc, great picture indeed and informative as far as the black backing is concerned. Only Chamonix & Polaris in sight. Is the picture dated, for sure pre '73.

Looks like a rack of seats on the left side, could probably spend hours searching for all the little details. Thanks for posting.

Yes definitely pre 73. I'm thinking the factory used up remaining older stock on the e9's and e3's. This one I found in the trunk of my '69.

I call those early mirrors Swan mirrors, very delicate. They were used through early 1969 perhaps, my 69 2002 had them. Bob, interested in selling yours? It would go nicely on my NK.

When exactly did they change the mounting position of the side mirrors?

On both my '71 Cs and '72 Csi they are positioned much further forward under the quarter window.

I recall they mixed the side mirror mounting position where US was back and Euro was forward at least in another vintage picture I saw.

Once more, lightly

I've taken this lovely factory photo and made some small adjustments to make it even nicer. The lighting was a mix of green fluorescent and window daylight leaving the shadows quite green. I've lightened the shadows, killed the green (well, most of it) and sharpened it a tad.

Enjoy.

Awesome Ian ! I can even see the rust bubbles more clearly now.

I have posted this picture before, it's always a winner for multiple reasons....

Peter,

He is probably leveling out a small 'blip' in the sheet metal. You'll notice that his eye is at the level of the bottom of the 'hammer'. I toured the BMW plant in 1980, and saw that being done to cars nearing the end of the assembly line at that time. I also observed a bottle of beer on every work bench, including the ones in the engine building portion of the plant!

There are more coupes and work going on at Don's shop than in that Karmann picture.
I say it is a fake picture staged by the same guys that produced the Apollo moon landing with a waving flag. I was at Don's shop yesterday and I swear I saw the Lunar Module there behind a pile of Getrags.

In the early 90's while a Parts Manager at BMW of SF I won a trip to Germany for meeting certain quotas. We toured the Dingolfing plant and I was blown away that all the vending machines had Beer as one of the offerings. The guy leading tour said the workers were allowed to drink as long as they didn't abuse it....although I didn't see any beer when they took us thru the Motorsport division garage in Munich.

Arde..

This may be the picture, you're talking about.

Posted those 2 in 2009 on this site and lost them. Until some thread woke them up.
With the famous 17 cars in 3 rows, this must be the only pix of "E9 Produktion strasse" I've seen.

The different positioning of mirrors is quite surprising...

Marc.
