If I am reading the On-line calculator, this tire is too small assuming 9% variation is large?

No way Jose! This set up will not work. There is basically a 2 inch overall tire/wheel diameter difference between the ideal 205/55/16 and the 205/40/16 tires. This will cause all kinds of havocs with the speedometer/odometer functions as well as overtaxing your suspension and steering components. Fitting the 40 series tires will also give you a huge gap between the tires and the fender lips, especially with coupes still retaining it's original suspension and the US headlights strut insert spacer collars. Needless to say, not a very esthetically pleasing look.

Rubber band tires simply WRONG for E-9's

When our Coupes were new--radial tires were also very new--to try to install the wheel/tire combos we commonly see today on many cars--blinged out Dodge and Chrysler 300 cars and Cadillac Escalade SUVs come to mind.

IMHO--is simply an inappropriate fitment for a fine classic car such as an E-9 for the many mechanical as well as esthetic reasons.
