Can you swap the 4spd portion with the Speedo housing onto a 265 that’s made for electronic Speedo?

Different part no, so doubt it, does your 265 not have the speedo drive hole machined and blanked off with a plug?
My 265 5 speed gearbox had a cable drive attachment. no swap needed.

I’m looking at a 265 from an 88 m3 and I looked around the interwebs and thought it sounded like it would have the blank plug and if I removed it, the Speedo gear from my 262 would fit…provided I swapped my speedo gear from the output shaft onto the 265 to receive the speedo gear.. does that make sense?
now I remember, I used a small slide hammer after I drilled and tapped a 6mm hole in the plug in the 265 trans. there might have been a small cross bolt pinching the plug.
The speedo gear, I removed the triple flange and seal, Drain fluid from trans first. I remember that mess the most. I then used a thin bent up screw driver to tap downward on the speedo gear, to remove then install into 265.
If that doesn't do it, Send out a photo of rear of trans to jog my memory again.

Is it essential that I have a later bell housing for the 265? I have a 73 Bav and it looks like they had a new bell housing for 74? Can I still use my 73? Ugh. I guess the parts add up..new flywheel/clutch/slave, too, right? I can modify shifter platforms and mounts…
You need the 74 and later bell housing.
You want the later bellhousing that uses a bolt on slave Cyl and the full cross over clutch release arm…not sure when that started..the clutches use the same disc but the pressure plate and throw out is different. The bolt on slave is cheaper and very widely available, same with the other clutch parts. Flywheel is the same.
I got the newer bellhousing with the trans, but I guess I'll need to source the release arm and pressure plate/throwout bearing...shoot...had all new stuff sitting for the old setup...lol
There should be a market for your bell housing, so that should offset the cost of the new one. As to clutch slave cylinders, they are available cheap from Rock Auto. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1381946&cc=1012486&pt=2044&jsn=10675. For this price, everyone should have a spare.
