If it is an E28, it may not be a Getrag 265, but a Getrag 260. If it is a 265, it will work or can be made to work with a minimum of effort. If it is a 260, it is more difficult due to the speedo drive.
Metric Mechanic used to have extensive identification information on their site.
A little use of the search function on this site ought to turn up the info you need. Mechanical speedo drive... well if you've ever seen it, you'd recognize what you have.
The casting numbers on the cases are all over the place. My 265, for example, says it is a 262.
Probably the easiest way to determine if it is a 265 is if it has a 3-section case as viewed from the side, not including the bellhousing. You will need to carefully look at the trans and identify three case sections. The 260 only has two.
This is because the 265 is an update of the 262, where they added the 5th gear. To accomplish this, they had to extend the trans and add the 5th gear, which required a new case section between the back and the primary housing. This is also why the 265 may say it is a 262, as they had extra 262 case sections lying around. In comparison, as I understand it, the 260 was a clean-sheet design, so they didn't have to have three case sections anymore.
