I just purchased a 71 2800CS and am starting to clean it up, not a restoration. Can someone tell what to replace the under hood insulation with? I'm taking out the old stuff as it is brittle and crumbling .

Any tips in cleaning up the engine compartment would be helpful and appreciated.

Part # 51481811883

$60 at Tomkinson

I put a drop cloth over the engine bay and under the hood to protect the front and spent a couple hours with a plastic scraper and Goo Gone or somesuch. Center and right panel done:

New insulation in (use a razor to slice the paper adhesive backing into several sections to make it easier to unpeel as it goes on):

I use Simple Green for engine and its compartment cleaning.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick and accurate reply. Im glad you gave me the part # as I couldn't seem to get that search engine to work for our age of car. It looks like this is my holiday weekend to work with a scraper and goo gone. A detailer gave me the name of some degreaser that worked very well. It is called SuperC, NC-680 by National Colloid in Santa Ana , CA. 714-241-1600. Check it out.

Most BMW online sites don't go back far enough but Penskeparts does as well as RealOEM. Get the part number there and then go to Tomkinson's site for the best price.
