I have a problem with the engine having a ticking noise when it gets warm. No ticking when it’s cold. I tougt it might be low quality oil causing this, so I bought Castrol classic 20w50w oil, which is suggested here on the forum. If anyone has another suggestion what might cause the ticking noise, please feel free to post it here

So here starts the confusions. I took my existing oil filter (Bosch) along to my parts supplier. He typed the Bosch numbers into his computer and presented me with a filter from Mahle. But the spring which was in the Bosch filter would just be moving freely inside the filter, not doing any good. Then he typed in my car in the computer and came up with a different filter with other diameter than the one that was in the car (?). I went to a second parts supplier and the exact same thing happenedbut with other filter producers.

My car is a 1970 2800cs. Is this the right, or wrong filter? This is the one which came up when looking up the car on the computer. The filter that was in the car was another one.

I ended up with buying the same filter that was in the car but didn’t use the spring. Which leads to the second issue; -the dipstick. My dipstick has a loose plastic stopper which means I don’t know how deep it is supposed to go in the oil pan. Can anyone meassure how long it supposed to be from the plastic stopper to the end of the dipstick on an 2800 cs? I have a dipstick from a 1985 635csi engine, can I use that one?

The same ticking noise is still there with 6 liters of Castrol classic 20w40 oil
 
You or your mechanic will need to adjust the valves (when cold), not difficult. If they are using your VIN to order parts this will not be correct. You'll need these parts including the filter, spring etc:

 
If your filter can has the bolt on the bottom the filter is the fat one and you Must use the spring! I think OX-51 is the top bolt canister and is skinnier.

Thanks for the info. I am my on (hobby)mechanic. I was thinking about adjusting the valve clearance but I don’t have anything to measure when the piston is at tdc on each cylinder. Don’t know if that is necessary?

Yes, my canister bolts on from the bottom. So I defenetly got the wrong filter. Will call my BMW dealer on Monday and get the right parts. Could this cause the ticking noise? Too little oil pressure? The light goes out 2sec after startup.

My 71 2800CS with the top bolt canister uses the MAHLE Original OX 41D Oil Filter.
The OX41 is superseded to OX41D and fits the PM2433 canister with the bolt on top. The OX51 is larger diameter and shorter. The OX41 (D) is approx 3.25 inch dia x 5 inch long.

Are you sure the OX51 is wrong? If it is the canister with the bolt on the bottom it should look like the picture per @Stevehose post with the top bolt and per the pic attached:

Don't worry about TDC when adjusting valves. Just rotate until the rocker is on the base circle of the cam.

Keep track of the valves you adjusted.
 
If you take out most or all of the spark plugs, rotating the engine to set the valve clearances will be a lot easier.

My long-gone 2002 (or several) had a ticking noise despite repeated efforts to set the valves. An old-time dealer tech told me something about the rockers sliding on the rocker shafts... I dunno whether to believe him, but he knew bimmers from the dark ages.

As seen on the above, the correct filter depends on whether you have the original (bottom bolt) filter housing, or someone changed to the (much more convenient) top bolt filter. I retrofitted my 3.0CS with a top bolt unit from an abandoned E12 I found on the street per a little inside knowledge from a local indie.

I talked to my local BMW dealer, and they had it all within a week. All except no.4. Is that little gasket-ring important?
