Hi- I have looked, and I am probably missing the right search, but I wanted to ask if the 2800cs 4 spd manual had a different length driveline than the 3.0cs? I am converting to a 5 speed and wanted to make sure that before I chopped 3.75 inches off of the front half of the driveline, that was in fact the correct amount to revmoe. Also, will a clutch line out of an e28 work for the slave cylinder? Thanks.

Depends on which 4 speed you have. As I recall, there are some with the ZF 4 speed and some with the Getrag 4 speed. The two transmissions are very different, in terms of dimensions.

It has the ZF transmission. So does anyone know how much it should be cut? I may be hosed as I dropped it off at the driveline shop today already to get cut.

In that case, do you already have the 5 speed you want to drop in? You should be able to measure that unit (bellhousing engine mate face to output flange driveshaft mate face) and the ZF unit in the same place. Then take the difference.

Worst case, you could have a custom double-U driveshaft whipped up for less than a grand. The domestic guys do it all the time.

2800CS 5 speed

I just finished a 5 speed conversion on a 1970 2800CS that had the ZF 4 speed box. The 5 speed (Getrag 265/6) was from a E12 528e, also used a 528e bell housing. You will need to get a new slave cylinder as it is different from the ZF.

While "I was in there" I also replaced the rear engine crank seal, clutch, PP, TO bearing, and had the flywheen ground. Use new flywheel bolts.

As far as the driveshaft. I was going to have mine shortened the 3+ inches, but th U-joints are somewhat worn and the driveshaft shop advised against it. Since they are not easily replaced, I elected to source an already shortened driveshaft with rebuilt U-joints. Not cheap, but this way I still have the original shaft and tranny should a future owner want to go back. Good luck as once you are done, it is a sweet conversion.
