3.0 cs doubt

Hello all !

I am considering 1972 cs as seen in the pictures. According to the info from the current owner car has been painted for 2 times and now is on the market becuase of to many projects sitting in his garage. I still did not check the car live becuase it is in other state. All inputs wellcome from cs community.

Rust on the rockers and doors is visible and it is only more pronunced on the later pix submited here first

This pic worries me the most. Engine hood is raised on the left side but also on some other pix. I can not explain the metal part which is visible above front tire . There should be a plastic cover right? Any suggestions.

I expect car can be had for 8000-9000 eur and some 10-15 k eur is needed to make a full restoration. I am not aware of the engine state but i guess since the car will go full restauration i will strip it into pieces anyhow.

Cars in Germany start around 5000 which are only rust buckets so maybe this is not a bad start. I count new rockers and new floors are a must replace by each car wash since it was built by karmann.

Thanx for the tips. I know it is impossible to asess the car based on pix.
I will use your arguments in front of my wife so be gentle ...

The metal "part" above the front tire looks like the tire caught the fender lip and bent it down. Depending on the severity it can be taped and hammered back into position with a heavy hammer and wooden dowel. Because of the size of the wheels/rims, the wheel wells should be rolled using a device like this (some also use a baseball bat):

The hood looks like the inside release has been loosened so the hood can be raised to inspect the engine.

Sorry, I am not very good at pointing out bodywork issues from pictures. Perhaps others here can offer suggestions.

I am surely no expert but the car looks neglected. Missing interior pieces, unhealthy looking engine compartment. Visible rust.

The consensus here seems to be buy a coupe someone else is underwater in. Like all of us.
Look for one you can do an autopsy on and eliminate the expensive surprises. Spend more upfront so you don't spend much much more down the line.

Take a point and shoot camera and take some flash photos looking up under the dash where the hood release is. The rockers should also be inspected by pulling back the carpet and removing the stainless covers on the outside to see what the structure looks like underneath. Also pull out the back seat and get the car on a hoist. The hidden areas are what you need to worry about.

Inspection

Current owner is willing to lift the car in his garage. Beneath the car is protected with some protective rubber seal. I know the car is no show but i am willing to invest some time and money. Just finishing pininfarina spider resto ( iknow it is not allowed to mention this type of car in this forum:mrgreen: so he will wait his time if i go for it.

I will inspect the car and take some more pics of dangerous areas.

You just killed my enthusiasam... I was told the car inside is original which i think it is not. It has been repolstered and i am just suprised there is no head rest on the front seats. According to some history input this car was apart of tito police escort ( hence the antena hole on the boot near the key lock ) .

Rubber seal, perhaps some ancient Rusty Jones undercoating can hide a multitude of mortal sins, and a good bit of rust. Sounds like your car fever has abated.
