Hi - how can I tell if my car is fitted with an LSD, it is a non runner at present and I am looking for part number clues or other tell tales

Thanks

Identifying limited slip differentials

On the side of the differential case, in front of the output flange, there will be some hand-stamped numbers, like 11 39, which are the numbers of teeth on the ring and pinion. For limited slip diffs, there is a letter "S" (for Sperrdifferential). These are often very difficult to see. they are less than 1/2" tall and weren't stamped very deep, so are usually obscured by paint or rust.

Sorry, but I can't remember which side they are on!

If the diff has been swapped from a later model car, i.e. an E12, they may have a larger "S" painted on in white paint.

None of the numbers or letters cast into the diff case are useful for identification.

Look on the right side of the rear differential. If the differential is LSD there is an 'S' imprinted in the metal casing - can be difficult to see.
12 39 indicates a 3.25 drive

also if you jack it up and spin one wheel the other should rotate in the same direction?

Thanks

Most helpful, I will try the spin method first. If not and LSD I will be in the market for one, along with a nice dog leg 5 speeder too, if you know of any one in the UK please let me know

Hi Sprint,

where abouts are you? If its a csi I would say a good chance she has a LSD. I have a spare one out of a breaker that is 3.25. Condition unknown.
