Identifying limited slip differentials
On the side of the differential case, in front of the output flange, there will be some hand-stamped numbers, like 11 39, which are the numbers of teeth on the ring and pinion. For limited slip diffs, there is a letter "S" (for Sperrdifferential). These are often very difficult to see. they are less than 1/2" tall and weren't stamped very deep, so are usually obscured by paint or rust.
Sorry, but I can't remember which side they are on!
If the diff has been swapped from a later model car, i.e. an E12, they may have a larger "S" painted on in white paint.
None of the numbers or letters cast into the diff case are useful for identification.
