I did a 9 blade fan update and installed a 30mm thick radiator from a 80' E24. This worked but the fan blade was extremely close. This did not present a problem except that the radiator was not in good shape and was leaking. I then ordered aluminum radiator off ebay. 40mm thick. Unusable with my current fan. Have others had this type of issue? Should I be having this issue?
Thanks.

2nd vote for electric. If you get the type where you select the temperature via a rheostat may I suggest hiding the fan relay and the rheostat somewhere under the headlight access pane. The new radiator I will be fitting when I drop my new engine in is 52mm thick!!!

I use the thicker stock rad, for Automatics originally, I think, or at least CSi cars. Works fine with red or black fan, with respective clutches
