450 sel 6.9

Nice

When I worked for Mercedes / BMW of Denver in 1977, one came in that was being delivered to Arizona. It had a minor fire regarding over spray of some coating of the cat if I remember properly. A bitch to clean up. But as the young "shag boy" the duty fell to me as well as a thorough test drive. This car was advertised as the fastest 4 door sedan in the world at the time. After rounding the corner from the dealership I put the pedal down, and went nowhere. A glance in the mirrors made me realize I was smoking off the tires big time, lifted and was propelled in to another dimension. Pretty cool for an 18 year old.
The old timers in the biz for sure have a love for the previous big litre car, the 6.3 and these seem to command more value to this day. One thing on the 6.9 to beware of is the famously expensive to repair hydra-pneumatic suspension. I always wanted one of these 6.9's for nostalgia if nothing else. I still have a W126 turbo diesel in my fleet that I consider to be my "work truck" I purchased "Winnie" in SoCal some 15 yrs ago, have put 250,000 miles on the car to date. Purchase price was $3000 Quite a value in retrospect. I love the old "S" sedans for the highway and like the e9, a timeless design. I bought a parts car for "Winnie" last year in order to do a minor restore...$500 for a straight 380 SEL with blown motor.
Back to the subject...seems the 6.9 has held its value over the years. Price seems fair considering. As a side note...make sure you get recent receipts for the suspension bits, this would also be true for those shopping for a TD estate wagon, an excellent wife car and dog hauler. Knock at least $2000 of the price if the suspension has not had recent attention. BTW the 6.9 is also a notorious gas hog, about the same as a 454 !
