5 speed install, how far does the shifter cylinder stick above the tranny tunnel?

Has anyone installed a 5 speed recently?

Or have the shifter boot and surround off?

I am trying to figure out how tall a rubber isolator should be

How far does the top of the cylinder that the shifter fits in sit above the sheet metal of the transmission tunnel?

Didn't do my install recently, but I have this picture that might help:

Thanks!, but that really doesn't help too much
I am trying to figure out how close the top of shifter platform is to upper part of the transmission tunnel

Why not just buy the foam? It compresses when installed to seal off the shift tower.

I have the foam, that isn't the point
I need to size a rubber isolator of some sort at the aft end of the shift platform
Would I make it 1" long 2"?
I would base this on how much of the top of the shift lever housing should be above the transmission tunnel

If I remember right, once the tranny is up in place the shifter housing is about 1/2' to 5/8' from the tunnel. That bushing that you have looks pretty close to what you would need but if you are going to use that pickup hole on the shifter , I would trim the front piece off a little so it sits comfortably and not at an angle Remember, that shifter housing is mounted at the frt by rubber bushings so there will be a little give and go with the housing

Hi,
I applied an different approach. See added pictures. I believe 2.0-2.5cm could be an good approach. Good luck !

Unfortunately I can't mock this up without installing the engine and transmission, and then it will be hard to reach this fitting
The shifter platform I am using is the Recommended one, part number 25 11 1 205 386
The tab at the rear of the platform is at quite an angle to the main part
The attachments at the front of the platform do have freedom to rotate up and down, they would rotate not flex as the bushing in them is pretty stiff
It looks like, hopefully, the forward hole on the tab lines up with the existing hole in the transmission tunnel

If I angle to top of the rubber fitting the layout would be approximately as shown in the attached image
The green and blue lines represent the thickness of the transmission tunnel material thickness

The distance from the top of the shifter platform to the underside of the transmission tunnel, as shown by the orange and green lines, would be about 3/16" (.1875") (4.76mm)
The top of the cylinder that is above the upper surface of the transmission tunnel would be about 3/4" (.75") (19mm)

Does that seem right?

It doesn't matter enough to write about but I will take a shot or three thusly.

The Only thing That Matters in the world of positioning (stay on topic man) it that the rear of the shifter platform is tied to the top of the tunnel, with the foam between to keep out fumes, greasy bits flung off the apparatus, and some of the racket. If the rubber baby buggy bumper breaks, the platform will a) drop down to the point where it's hard to shift b) you may not be able to get into some gears without lifting the shift lever up first and that's a hassle c) the dratted thing may rub on the driveshaft, causing an annoying noise and scoring a groove in said dshaft, you don't want that. DAMHIK, BTDT, got the tshirt, bumper sticker, video, tattoo (not) and life sucks.

so my suggestion(s) are in no particular order: Get It Up, Tie It Up, and Be Done With It. You can thank me later or not at all.

HI

Another approach is to brace the shift platform. This way it is not connected to the tunnel; nothing to fail. I am using Autosolution's kit including short shifter. It is similar to the Coupe King's kit BTW. I included pics below.

Bill

Thanks Bill,
The shop installed mine, due to covid I have not seen it yet, I didn't realize the Coupe King set came with a brace similar to the one you show above
They said it took some fiddling to get it right, I hope it is OK

The support from the trans to the shift platform that Bill bought from Autosolutions looks much better than the one I bought from CoupeKing. The CoupeKing places the support too close to the driveshaft and uses small bolts. Instead I will mount the shift platform to the tunnel and discovered that there is already a hole for it. A link bushing from NAPA is $1.60 and will bolt it up using a nylok nut.

i just went looking and they just have a bunch of sample pages that don't really show anything ... but the picture above looks quite nice.

A bolt, 2 washers, a swaybar rubber donut and a nylock…. All done.

Hi
I was shopping for a short shift kit for the 265 OD conversion and Ronald Aractingi mentioned his shifter support and cross member. His website is not the best; its best to contact him through the site and ask questions; nice to deal with. I believe he used to work at MM and had something to do with their support and cross member. His work is top notch.

Regards
Bill

From Auto Solutions regarding the trans cross member: I don't right now. I will eventually. I am out of them. it is a pretty low volume item and I am unfortunately so overbooked with M2 3 and 4 that I cannot address the earlier cars before this summer.

If anyone wants to try to make the Coupe King shift platform setup work in their car, I think I still have mine. I installed my platform to the tunnel, using the Don Lawrence bolt, sway bar bushing and two nut technique. Message me if interested.
