I see there is a euro 1980 635csi (at a stage of restoration?)came up on ebay recently. Looks like some parts could used for our coupes. I know that a 79-81 528i 5 sp has the mechanical speedo drive. Would this trans have the same set up?
Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes, the original transmision from an '80 euro 635 should be a Getrag 265 5speed, ether OD or Close Ratio, plus you get the flywheel/ clutch assembly and all of the shift linkage to go with. Original motor was the M90 = 200+ hp. The rear diff will swap also and they were usually a limited slip type.
Radiator
Water pump
Fan clutch assembly
Expansion tank
Seats, with brackets
Clutch master / slave
Seat belts?
Might be able to fit the sway bars too...

Plus you can sell on other parts to make back some cash
Side mirrors
Euro front turn signals
Euro Instrument cluster
Steering wheel
Steering box (if not leaky)
Headlight wiper system
Various other stuff

Don't pay too much for it... Or pay too much have it shipped... Not worth it. Find one locally on craigslist. The 635 value is in the tank and these euro models are more common than you would think.

I bought a '80 euro 635 for parts for my coupe. I stripped the 635 a couple of months ago and have parts ready for my winter projects on my coupe. The radiator and fan clutch are already done and made summer driving way cooler.

Thank you Wayne, for the valuable and pertinent info on euro 635's of that era. I'm going to watch this sale closely and observe the bidding, if any.
I'm in southern Ontario, so a trip to New Hampshire is a full day's jaunt, needless to say I wouldn't go just to look. It sounds like a good parts car, the fellow likely thought as you did, they're not really worth the restoraton costs.

Hi Wayne:
I've been corresponding with the Ebay 635 owner( I think?), and he cannot tell me whether its CR 5 spd or OD. What he could tell me was, it is a NOT a dogleg shift pattern. He used the term "traditional", which I presume is 5th far right /up.
Could this be a clue as to which it is? I have the vin #, could I find out from researching that?
If anyone else has any insight, it would be appreciated, thanks

Yes, if 5th is up and to the right of 3rd it is an over drive transmission (OD).

The close ratio gear box has 1st gear down and to the left... Staight bellow reverse.

There is no such thing as a close ratio Over Drive transmission no matter what the seller might say.

If this is euro 635csi on ebay for $1000 you might be at the limit of its value for parts if it as an OD. The CR transmission is worth silly money to the E30 M3 racer guys ($1500-$2000). You can still get OD transmissions out of yards for $200-$500. You could still come out ahead, if it has the parts you want and they are in good shape. The OD transmission will probably be more enjoyable in your coupe anyway.

I bought mine locally and for $600, but the CR transmision needs to be rebuilt and the limited slip is not so limited. Between scaping the car and selling some choice parts I just about broke even.... But it was lots of work.

Question regarding 5spd trans ratios

While driving on mountain roads I noticed that when downshifting 3rd to 2nd the engine revs very high. This seems to make it hard to use the transmission for cornering effectively.
(by the way I am still working on my carburetor sync and adjustments- thanks for all the help given in my previous thread)
Do others have the same experience?

When I make the decision to change over to the Getrag 265 it looks like I may run into the same issue.

Would I be better off with a close ratio? I know there are reliability concerns with this transmission but it may work better for downshifting.
What are the ratios on the close ratio transmission?

5pd----------------- 4pd
1st 3.82 : 1------------ 3.85 : 1
2nd 2.20 : 1 ----------- 2.08 : 1
3rd 1.40 : 1 ----------- 1.375 : 1
4th 1.00 : 1 ----------- 1.0 : 1
5th 0.81 : 1 ---------- N/A
reverse 3.71 : 1 ----- 4,13 : 1

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight.
