I may be buying a 3.0 CS that needs a transmission. I'd like to install the 5 speed manual, rather than the OE 4 speed. I understand there are only certain ones that will both fit and accept the speedometer cable from the E9 chassis.

Can you help a 'newbie' to this forum, but the owner of two E9's in the 1970's with the info needed so I can acquire the correct tranny?

THANKS for any and all help.

Need 5 speed manual tranny information

This is a cross list from the E9 general discussions forum.

you might want to read this ... it will probably have all the info that you need.
http://www.e9coupe.com/tech/5speed.html

after that, since this information is within posts, please try the search tab on the toolbar above ... and type in 5 speed ... you will have to weed through a couple, but if you pay attention to the title it will probably expedite things.

if you currently have a 4 speed, then you probably have the speedo drive hardware that can probably be added to the newer trannies that don't have the drive.

work or not work?

Was going to ask about the viability of 83 733i with factory 5speed that I was trying to buy as a donor (on the cheap)...The more that I read, the more it looks like that it's not really a good option or even an option?...SFDon, or any others thoughts? I was going to buy just for the 5 speed, or if the engine is sound, both? Either? Neither?

The 83 has an M30b32 with 181hp, not much different that a plain old M30. You should be able to remove the plug in that trans and insert the speedo drive.

IF you use the later Getrag 265/6 you will need to remove the speedo drive and the helical gear on the output shaft from your tranny and install on the new one.
Why not just get the 265/5 in the beginning?
Tranny day today at the shop!
