Thanks to a lot of help from group posts, group members and particularly sfdon I’ve finally made some progress on installing the 5 speed. The aluminum twin mount cross member I bought from the dealer ended up lining up with the entry / extraction slots for the T-bolts so fabricated adapters from ¼” steel that allows me to attach at 2 points on each side of the tranny, one bolt in front of the cross member, a second bolt behind the cross member. I also made two ¼” aluminum spacer washers to raise the transmission the ¼” the adapters dropped the cross member. Some day I may fabricate my own cross member for more ground clearance but first I want to get it on the ground to see if it’s even needed.

I replaced the bell housing studs with bolts, it just makes lining up & sliding in the transmission so much easier.

I also replaced the universal joint / shifter eye on the back of the transmission. I used that old end to extend the bottom of my shifter into a short shifter. So a little bit of welding and fitting in a new $1.76 Oilite bronze bushing from McMaster- Carr and I now have a poor mans short shifter in the car and it seems to work fine.

Now all I need to do is source some greaseable U-joints and get my clutch hose from the dealer and I should be running again :-D:-D:-D. I couldn’t have done it without this group. THANK YOU ~ John Buchtenkirch

Nice Shifter!

John, I we must have had similar weekends! Mine ended up being made out of two nuts (drilled out to 10mm dia.) and a bolt. What is the measurement on your shifter from center of the hole to the center of the pivot ball?

David, mine is now 1 ½” from the center of the ball to the center of the eye that actually does the shifting. The stock shifter was about 1 1/8” before I modified it. I didn’t have the correct expansion reamer so I ran an X letter drill thru the Oilite bronze bushing by hand & got a surprisingly tight fit :). ~ John Buchtenkirch

Sorry for the tardy reply...

Mine is 1 and 9/16" center to center - almost the same. Have you tried yours out yet? I'm guessing that you're still mid-project judging by your other posts. I'll be interested in your assessment. The linkage in my car was so broken-down when I bought it that I won't really have a decent point of comparison between old and new lengths.

Here's my whole linkage, by the way. The nuts in the center allow for periodic tightening of each joint. I wish I had thought to use some oiled bronze parts; I'll have to rely instead on the relatively enclosed shape of the assembly to keep the grease in and the dirt out.

David, to be honest I also have no comparison point myself, my car was originally automatic. It seems to shift fine so far but the real test comes when I drive it maybe in 2 or 3 months. Don’t know what else to tell you except I did get almost all of the play out of the linkage. Next rebuild or clutch I could do slightly better with the correct expansion reamer but it’s fine now :). ~ John Buchtenkirch

I did the same on my 635. Distance from the bottom of the ball to the top of the eyelet, that I used, was 5/8". You have to make sure it will clear the guibo
