this is a two question post. first, i am trying to replace the center tie rod or "center track rod" as my manual calls it. the manual calls for use of a "7009 extractor" to separate that center rod from the other tie rods and the steering arms that move the whole thing and apparently i need it cuz i can't get those suckers loose after taking the nuts off.

my second question is... my car feels like i am running over small speed bumps while accelerating in first gear during tight turns and right after releasing the clutch from a stop. i sometimes feel the thumping during very hard acceleration in 2nd gear. this may or may not be related but there is a severe vibration that seems to be coming from the rear that can be felt from about 80-115 kph, but goes away at 120. of note... this vibration was never felt until after i heard a loud thump one day similar to the sound of a wheel weight flying off inside of the wheel well (distinct contact) i know its a long shot, but any ideas on the cause of this problem?

Centre bearing support on your drive shaft? Mine developed a tear in the rubber donut and produced similar symptoms under harder acceleration.

Tie rod ends can be a real bear. I don't know about the 7009 tool but it is probably either a tie-rod puller (grabs the external material and a hardened bolt is turned to push in the threaded part) or a it is special wedge / two-tined fork device which you pound onto the ball with a hammer. You can generally rent a puller or pick one up inexpensively. However, there isn't always room to use one. The pound-it fork devices are also easily purchased but they come is several size, all of which are invariably less than ideal. These devices also tend to completely destroy the boot. I think I even have an air-hammer version in my box.

It usually helps to use some penetrating oil (liquid wrench or similar) on the joint. I have also been know to get out a propane torch to heat things up; the oild usually will wick in well with heat. I find this is a good way to give myself a nice 3rd degree burn too.

My recommendation is visit your local auto parts store and pick up a puller if you think you have room to use one.

Good luck.

All steering joints -- take two hammers and simultaneously hit both sides of the part into which the taper fits. Never fails to pop the joint loose after 2 or three raps.

The vibration -- Sounds like a failed hardischeibe/giubo/rubber drive donut. Might also be the center drive shaft bearing, might be both.
