What is the easiest way to replace the oil filter? I have the one with the big red canister. My issue is first, it takes two people, one to hold the filter centered from above and one person under the to tighten the center bolt. I tried doing it myself from below and apparently the cannister wasn't perfectly centered, the lip bent while I was tightening it and now it leaks oil. Any advice? Suggestions? I would like to do it myself with one person without making a mess like I did this last time.

If the filter lip is bent so that it now leaks, your first (and not only) option is to bend it back. Aluminum does not like to do this and it may crack, leading to the second choice.

But first, yes, the bottom bolt canisters are a hassle. I got around it by removing the battery, giving more room to work, and by removing the filter and adapter complete (three bolts into the block) then taking it apart on the bench after draining oil.

Option 2, and the one which most of the still-sane M30 owners choose, is to use the later top bolt style filter adaptor. These are available from several later cars (I got mine from a 530i abandoned on the side of the road).

A quick search on the realoem.com fiche tells us that the top bolt filter adaptor p/n 11421716584 (OIL FILTER HEAD) was found on the following vehicles:

E12 528i Sedan
E12 530i Sedan

E23 733i Sedan
E23 735i Sedan

E24 633CSi Coupe
E24 635CSi Coupe
E24 630CSi Coupe

E28 533i Sedan
E28 535i Sedan

Ergo, learn to use the fiche.

I actually bent the inner ring whilst i was trying to tighten the bolt from below.
i guess the canister wasn't sitting flush.
ruined two sets of gaskets trying to get that thing back in.
i don't like this design, neither top or bottom mounted bolt
i want to be able to screw in my oil filter and forget about it

Thank you all for the wealth of information. Interestingly enough I stripped a 1980 BMW 633csi a couple of months ago and one of the parts I did keep was the oil filter assembly. That was going to be my next question, if they are interchangable and from the comments I guess they are. I figure it would be the most sensible solution. Thank you all again.

Use it, since you have the part already and don't need to go out of your way.
Me, i rather not have any bolt it's going to be awkward either way ,bolt from the top OR below...
I like simple things... :)

hmmm Ireland's spin on adaptor uses Fram filters, in some areas not well regarded.
Comments?
I removed my spin on adapter about 25 years ago when the Fram filter burst on cold start-up one morning (45 degrees F) and dumped most of my oil on my driveway before I realized what was happening.

I think the filter is a common one for Chevy small blocks. If so, I would use the best filter you can buy - certainly not Fram.

If you have the car on a lift: won´t the canister come down/out downwards, having opened the long bolt....? or is there too much in the way?
My old Jaguars are easy in that there is nothing in the way.
I have the later style filter house with canister and paper filter, on most of my cars.
But I admit; the large, red canister is pretty cool !!

Power steering pump is in the way. Otherwise it would work
