I'm finishing up a complete mechanical restoration on my coupe. The body and paint are in very good "driver" condition and am going to tackle the interior next. The car's paint is Melaga and the interior is a "medium brown/tan". Is there a interior code for the proper interior color for this car and is there any idea where it's located. Also, does anyone know what interior color options were available in 72?

Also, this coupe is about "rust free" as it could get. The pans are in great shape and the interior still has the soundproofing material on the interior floors and is in relatively great condition. Even though the car will be louder, it seems like I should take this out to keep water and moisture from ever getting trapped below. Thoughts?

Thank You,

Pat

I'd leave the soundproofing in place unless it is peeling off. Best just to keep the water out.

Interior colors: black, blue, red, brown and tan in leather.

Thanks Sven. I'm asking advise on the interior soundproofing that is in the footwells. Is that the stuff that you would keep intact?

Pat - Are you asking about the black tar like stuff that is stuck to the sheet metal or the greyish foam with the cardboard like skin that is under the carpet? The tar is usually really stuck on well. You might consider pulling / scraping this off of the driver's side front floor pan to see what the condition of the metal is. If it is all rusty/pitted then you should remove the rust, clean, patch, weld, etc., and then replace with the dynomat extreme sound insulation. The pans are usually the worst at the round plug holes and in the main rectangular depression (in the fronts). Unless you are really getting into this then I would leave the other tarred areas on the transmission tunnel, under the back seats and a few additional places it is lurking.

I think the only reason water could get in there in the first place is from your shoes, window left open in the rain, or possibly, if the rocker drains are plugged then the sunroof (or via window) could fill up the rocker and leak out into the floor area. Back in the 80's my bavaria did this until I figured out the weep holes were plugged.
