I have been using the site for some time now and thought the guys that are graciously giving me much needed advice might like to know a little more about who they are helping.
A few months ago I came across a 1973 e9 that is straight an mostly rust free.I knew little about the vehicle, but a little internet research confirmed my gut feeling that that I would forever regret not purchasing it. The car is in fairly nice shape but shows all the normal wear of a car that spent a large portion of the last 40 years being used as a daily driver.The engine runs but carburetors are in sad shape. I plan to strip it down , do a complete body work/repaint, new interior ,and engine and transmission swap. I have no experience with BMW's and will undoubtedly be coming to this forum for help on a regular basis as I get further into the project.
I was born in 1963 and lived in Europe until the early 80's; so even though I did not know the car by name, it's styling took me right back to the era where I started dreaming of having a car of my own. Actually the car that had me dreaming when I was 10 or so was an orange 2002 with a flat black hood and big yellow fog lights mounted on the bumper. So 40 years later it is somewhat fitting that I should end up with my first BMW being a 3.0 (the 2002 looks smaller now than it did when I was 10).
I have worked on cars since my teens and for the most part out of necessity, therefore the experience was not always positive. But over the years my vehicles have become more reliable thereby allowing me to spend time in the garage just for the fun of it.
I came to Hawaii in the late 80's to be able to windsurf as much as possible...I still love the sport and try to get on the water as often as I can. I am married, 2 kids (3 and 17), I am a masonry contractor, and I am trying to restore my 1973 e9... So the e9 may take a while.
We also recently finished cleaning up my wife's 280z that she has kept since college; and just last week she decided to jump on the the BMW wagon and bought a still very clean 635csi.
