I used to work for a company in California that was also one of the largest auto insurers in the state. They used to periodically offer vehicles that were either stolen or a rejected repair to employees rather than sell them through a salvage yard (this may have been prior to Copart).
I recall a Volvo wagon being offered that had been repaired by welding roughly half the car to another um-damaged half. While I suspect it looked a lot better than this e3, the owner of the Volvo and insurance policy holder rejected the repair and it was being offered for sale to employees before it went to a salvage auction. This was in the 1980's and was a relatively new car at the time. I don't recall any other details, but I have trouble imagining any insurance carrier allowing such a repair these days, just too much liability.
