It's a humbug. Perhaps first, disassemble the odometer reset thingy from the "holder" attached to the trim panel. After that there's a screw IIRC into the console, and another may be at the right front of the trim panel (the hardest place to reach, you bet).
You also have to disconnect the wires from the hazard switch, which are individually connected, not set in a multi-plug. Best to make a good diagram before you take these out. Know that the haz switch is always hot, so disconnect battery ground before letting the wires dangle about. Depending on your year, maybe there are window circuit breaker(s?) on the trim panel also.
Yeah, it's real fun. Best is the three-handed job to reassemble the trip odo knob, I like that most of all.
