I'd replace that flex disk before driving it another mile so it doesn't snap and ruin your drive shaft etc.

Nice looking car!

The number one place for hidden horrors (in my personal experience) is under the rocker covers. Didn't see any photos of those areas so i thought i'd mention it. Sometimes hard to do on a PPI because it involves minor disassembly (removal of the cover).

My car looked pretty good from the outside, but once those covers were removed showed substantial rust holes that penetrated through four layers of metal. 200 hours of my own time later (cutting, welding, painting etc.) and everything is back together . . . just was a bit more than i expected!

The rockers look really good and clean. The underside where the rockers fold under and connect to the unibody looked good too, aside from being driven through a construction zone.

I may be going to the shop tomorrow, if I do, I'll be sure to check them closely. Thanks.

Blown Head Gasket

Compression test showed a leak in cylinder 4, water in it this morning. If the head's not warped looking at $1200-1700, plus the other repairs to make it safe to drive.

My 'willing to pay price' has dropped pretty far from the asking of $23,900 to below $19,000.

My 2 cents worth from the other side of the world...

My car was in way way way better condition than that and I've spent in excess of
40k with out the engine or upholstery yet so be very careful here.

I'm not trying to to put you of, but if your intention is to restore to a really nice
condition (something like a 7-9 out of 10) that car will hoover up money quicker than you could print it, in my mind that's a 10k car at very best
If you dont like spending loads of money or your not able to do most of the work yourself
In my mind you would be better to keep looking for a better car which probably wont cost
a whole lot more than the asking price for that car.

My 2 cents worth, for what its worth

Good luck

Steve

I'd throw 12 to 15k at them and see what they say. It is hard to find a non-rusty car in the northeast, so I wouldn't give up on it. Maine ain't California as far as coupe availablity! I have spent many summers up there, and I have never seen one in the state of Maine.

Thanks for the feedback, looking for a reliable showable driver. This is an impulse due to its local availability and knowing the previous owner and people who have maintained the car.

Sounds like you are doing a top notch concours restoration if you have that much in body work.

Thanks for the feedback.
There are quite a few Coupes around here, tucked in garages and hidden away. If we can't reach an agreement, I have no trouble walking away after all the inspections and tests.

No its far from being Concours...I don't really know what you guys pay up in the States for your body work and paint jobs but I'm guessing its probably apples for apples to NZ rates, most trades down here are $60 an hour at least so it adds up real fast.
There are all sorts of different levels of workmanship and quality, it all depends what your happy with, for me I like to do things properly so I pay more.

Like I said, outwardly my car was way better looking than this one your looking at, it looked really nice and straight with no obvious problems, BUT as you may or may not know, that don't mean much in coupe land, I had rust in the bottom of the A pillars where they join the sills/rockers, just like your picture shows and also big rust in the rear of the sills/rockers etc etc etc and it went on and on, half a trunk floor, new drivers and passengers floor panels, rebuild the fuel tank, I could go on and on...

The point I'm trying to make and I'm sure everyone will agree with me is that these cars hide most of there problems, if it looks bad on the out side, it will all most for sure be much worse on the inside once you start poking around.

At the end of the day it's your call, just don't rush in to the first car you come across, take your time looking and really do your home work first.

My final words are: RESTORATION IS VERY EXPENSIVE (unless you can do it your self)

Once again

Good luck

Put an offer on the car that was accepted. I'm glad my low offer is good, yet I have reservations about buying it.

Is it too late--

to cancel your offer?

You need to take time and look at a couple of "good" examples before you dive into a money pit. Take time to do some research--suggest that you drive a few miles to Bow, New hampshire and meet Mario Langston--he is often mentioned on this board as a professional in your part of the world--he knows these cars from restoring, servicing and owning them.

Nothing signed, not too late. Maybe I'll visit Bow NH tomorrow on my way to the Vintage at Saratoga.

Purchased, after extensive research, expert advice, 2 detailed inspections and being old enough to know better. Hope my stewardship of this is as rewarding and fun as my 2002.

Congratulations Andrew!
Did you make it over to Saratoga or VSR to see some coupes?
If I had seen your post earlier I would have offered to meet up with you since you may have been driving past my area (Upper Valley NH/VT border) on your way over. Don't know where in Maine you are, but my leisure drives are usually in the Wht. Mtns. and into Maine so keep an eye out for a silver coupe.

Thanks. Yes, went to Saratoga, via Center Ossippee, NH cross lots to Rutland. Talked to Rob Siegel and Chuck Moss. I did talk with Mario Langston on the phone.

May drive it to Lime Rock for the Vintage Fall Festival.

I'm in Brunswick.

Congrats...

on your purchase. I found Mario at VSR to be extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

I'm in Boston, so I'm a little curious about Saratoga and Ossippee Center.

I was told there's a BMW slavalge yard somewhere around Ossippee NH. Is that why you were there?

What's in Saratoga??

Sorry for my naivete/nosiness.

Congrats Andrew on your purchase!!

First and I foremost, I must ask the most important question.
...What did you name your coupe?

Vintage at Saratoga is a fun friendly event, pre-1989 BMWs only, easy drive from Boston. Held at the Saratoga Auto Museum, Saratoga Springs, NY.

Steve Buswell has a small shop and a yard chock-a-block with rusting 2002s. I was returning a part I bought that was not any good.

Try to go to the BavAuto Show in early Oct. Only 1 E9 last year.
