As early Porsche 911s continue to grow in value, we are beginning to see movement from classic BMWs. The 2002s have started to see a shift, as have the E9 coupes. Many collectors and enthusiasts are beginning to see these big coupes as a great alternative to some of the other vintage sports cars. They are extremely comfortable and have quite a few standard "luxury" items like power windows, a/c, leather, and power steering that are missing from their Stuttgart siblings. Plus, they are not only easy to drive for long touring events, but they still have that legendary BMW handling which makes them a blast in the twisties. These really are the best of both worlds and a good addition to anyone's early German automotive collection.

Right now, the values are very attractive. However, with CSL prices inching towards the quarter-million dollar mark, the supply may not be able to keep up with the demand. The most difficult challenge with finding one of these Karmann built coupes is locating a good, dry, straight, and solid chassis. That's what first attracted us to this particular example.

This 3.0 is an original California car. One of the primary owners was a BMW club member who lived in the San Diego county area. It looks like he purchased the car sometime in the 80's. He owned the car until he passed away in the late 90's. From there, his wife kept the car but didn't use it much. She gave it to her son about 8 or so years ago before she passed away. The son started a light restoration on the car but realized it was too much for him to take on especially since he didn't drive it very much either. He sold it about 2-years ago to a local BMW enthusiast. His goal was to clean up the car and make sure it was safe to drive. He enlisted the help of Jeff Tighe with TP Motorsports. Jeff is a very well respected vintage BWM independent mechanic/restoration expert in the Southern California area.

Jeff performed the following:

Installed 5-speed gearbox
Installed good quality clutch
New pilot and throw-out bearing
Changed coolant hoses
New ignition
New A/C compressor, dryer, and lines
Sorted factory A/C and made sure it functioned properly (blows 42 degrees!)
New/rebuilt radiator
New fan/fan clutch (updated CS style)
New water pump
New thermostat
New carburetors (Zenith)
New ignition
New turn-signal stalk/wiper control
Good condition original exhaust system
New brass radiator overflow tank
Full service
Got original Blaupunkt radio and power antenna to work
Rebuilt speedometer.
Repaired heater
Rebuilt clock (runs a bit slow)
Made sure all the power windows and other electric items in the car functioned properly

Jeff did a compression and leakdown test, which it passed. He also did countless other minor repairs to make sure the car was in good running order. The next step was to give the cosmetics some attention. The following items were refurbished or replaced:

Re-dyed interior
Installed freshly leather wrapped Euro 3.0 CSL steering wheel
New wood dash and wood on door panels
Original vintage wooden shift knob
Refurbished original dash, center console, and rear parcel shelf (by Juan Ortiz. . .one of the best local vintage upholstery shops)
Repainted body above the belt line
Belt line trim polished
Located and restored factory tool kit including all the tools
New 3.0 CS owner's manual
New custom Coco Mats
New rocker panel deco trim
Correct engine decals and foam hood pad
New updated retractable 3-point seat belts for front seats
Fresh original/correct windshield

Furthermore, one of our local SoCal E9 enthusiasts spent several weeks detailing the engine bay and trunk. He did an amazing job giving new life to many original items as well as installing new components.

The condition of this E9 is an excellent driver. Anywhere we could preserve original items we have. Much of the interior is original including parts of the leather (seat surfaces are leatherette), carpet, door cards, and headliner. The seat bottom surface of the driver seat is starting to separate at the seams but it is hardly noticeable. As you can imagine, being 40-years old, it does show some wear, but it is very minor and has a great patina and feel to it (like an old comfortable arm chair). The exterior is equally as nice with no significant flaws and much of the trim and glass remaining original. It also wears its original alloy wheels with new tires.

The most remarkable aspect of this CS is the condition of the underside. It is original and unrestored. Sorry, it doesn't have that "pretty" just powdercoated/over restored look. Instead, it looks pretty similar to what these chassis looked like new. There are no signs of major accident damage or rust/rust repair. Everything is very tidy and as Jeff Tighe said, " it is one of the better original un-restored coupes" he's seen. The rocker panel deco trim was removed and inspected (a very common spot for serious rust) and it was found incredibly dry. Also, the floors and frame rails appear to be original and undamaged.

All that being said, my personal favorite aspect of this coupe is the way it drives. It is so smooth and effortless. It fires up with the first twist of the key and purrs. It accelerates with ease and shifts beautifully with no synchro issues. It cruises easily at 80mph with no hesitation and the A/C blowing ice cold. We have taken this car on several vintage tours over the past 12-months and it performed great. It cruised easily at 90 mph+ on the open road.

This E9 comes with a new owner's manual, extra keys, spare, jack, original seat belts, and a complete tool kit.

They do have very nice cars, especially early P cars. This coupe has been discussed many times, don't know how serious Paul is about selling it.

We started our E9 journey nearly 2-years ago. It was a car I wanted to enjoy and was fond of the looks. I was talked into it by Jeff Tighe and we did a partial trade for a 912 I had. It worked out for both of us. Jeff, Chris, Andy, and many other members of the SoCal E9 community helped us out quite a bit.

Naturally, we invested WAY more than we originally planned. This was never looked at a car to "flip" for profit (none of the cars we buy ever are)...that's why we primarily do consignment.

So, we have racked up about 3,000 miles while sorting this nice E9 survivor. It has come a long way. It is very handsome and has a nice original survivor feel to it. I am a stickler for getting everything to work and I think we have done just that....even down to dealing with the clock getting sent out 3x to be fixed...it finally works but runs a bit slow.

My wife and I have used this car to go on long roadtrips to Monterey and Palm Springs. We may even drive it to Big Bear this weekend. I also use it once a week as a daily driver. It is (by far) the most practical and comfortable vintage car I've owned. It has been a tough decision to sell it. We've had it on our website and in our showroom, but have not actively tried to sell it. Had several people ready to buy it, but they just were the right people. Now that I am finally closing in on our early 1600 project getting completed and the possibility that I may acquire another early 911 project and the fact that I just bought a cool 914 survivor, something does have to go.

So, the Ghia we bought and the 3.0 are being actively marketed...not sure which will sell first.

It's a nice car, Paul has done a very nice job of keeping it honest and in proper order. Sometimes I think people are looking for a little spice with additions like Alpina wheels and lowering springs. This Coupe starts out with a clean slate so that the next owner can add his own touches or leave it alone as BMW built it.
 
Hey Paul! - two different boards in one day, I think that's a first. I first met Paul from Autokennel through the 911S Registry crowd. He is the one that ended up selling my Porsche for me and as I just said on the 911S yesterday in a post unrelated to this car, it was one of the smoothest transactions I have ever had with a dealer or anyone for that matter buying or selling a car. I consider Paul a friend now, especially after the recent Targa CA adventure, good times man! But I just wanted to disclose that to anyone that did want a second opinion on any of his cars or need me to check another BMW out here in SoCal just let me know. I should say as long as it is in Orange County. I bring that up because I looked at this car for a member here, I will keep his moniker and name private out of respect for him. He lives back east, but he had asked me to check this car out, what......about a month ago? I took a bunch of pictures for him and told him exactly what I thought with no influence from Paul. In other words, I have no skin in the game other than my reputation on this board so I would never say something I didn't believe. Anyhow, I still have the pictures I took that day if any of you want to PM me I can send you the Shutterfly link. It is a great car, we took it out for a spin and I could see on Paul's face that he truly enjoys driving this car and I know he will be sad to see it go, but is serious about selling it. Right Paul? Doooon't do it! :) OK, well, just wanted to give full disclosure. And like HB Chris said but I will reiterate, Paul is a highly respected member of the Porsche community down here, he does a lot for them and a lot of the BMW guys do know him from C&C and his gatherings at his shop on the weekends so don't be afraid to ask him questions especially about vintage Porsche's. Thanks Shane...Yeah, this has been such a tough decision. On the one hand, my wife is telling me, "don't do it." Which I totally get. On the other hand, my dad/business partner is constantly asking me, "are we running a museum or dealership." If the Ghia sells first, then it will be easier for me to justify keeping the coupe. I am a sucker for "light" restorations and we just got a '73 911 E Targa on consignment that is begging for some cleaning up. She's like a pretty girl in a bad prom dress...I just love these mild projects...we will see.
 
I totally get it. And I'm just laughing when anyone says "light" restoration on an early 911. They never seem to be as "light" as one likes.....coming from you though is different. But now you have perked my interest in the E Targa, I will try and swing by and check it out this weekend maybe. I'm rooting for the Ghia to sell!

Re-upholstering front seats.

Ok...I know I'm trying to sell the car, but I'm just still not done with it...I can't help it.

After driving the car this weekend to Big Bear (it was fantastic and didn't miss a beat/see pics below), the seats were bothering me. 250 miles and the softness was just too much...plus, the original leather headrests were starting to show wear (and crispy). Also, the stitching was starting to separate. So, our dear friend, Juan Ortiz (many of you local E9 guys know Juan and know his quality of work) agreed to help restore them.

We pulled them out yesterday and Juan should hopefully have back in the car next week. Here is a pic of the seats out of the car...stay tuned for pics once they are done.

Dude - If you want to sell the car, then I hope you do. You appear, however, to have a normal healthy attachment to this particular car, and it would be a shame to break up such a nice couple.
 
Paul's right about "lite restoration". I' m doing a 69 T that I'v owned since 72 and has been parked for the past 32 years. Currently around $24k and not done yet. I to have seen Paul's coupe and support that it is a good car.
 
There's a difference between wanting to sell it and having to sell it. Unfortunately, I can't keep them all and I love making this car better and better. But, when I look at what I have now, it just makes sense.

Good news is Juan just finished installing the freshly upholstered seats. Boy, what a difference...so much more comfortable and they look awesome. The headrests were a bit more complicated, but they should be done by today. Funny, but I kinda like it without the headrests...

The back seats were in great condition. We just had the rest of the interior professionally died to match the front seats. Juan made some leather covers to protect the top of the rear seats which tend to get destroyed from the sun...pretty common with these cars.

We just took a deposit on the car. The new owner lives in NorCal. Great guy and certainly a perfect fit for the E9 community. I have a feeling you will be seeing this car at many local events like Legends.
