Everyone,

I am looking for some basic projects for the 74 while it is winter and I will not be taking the car out too much. One thing I noticed is that the calibers look pretty poor so I want to get in this area and clean everything up. I really have two questions:

1) Does anyone have any pics of what the wheel area should look like as the car came out of the showroom?
2) Are there any other relatively inexpensive repairs/upgrades that should be done while I'm at it?

Thanks for your help.

W&N has a brake part sale atm http://www.wallothnesch.com/e/frameoffer.htm

Pretty much all you need is there.

Brake hoses are good to do and not too expensive.
A repair kit for the calipers is 14 Euro which is also pretty cheap. Another 50 for pistons.
If you are going to dismantle it completely to paint the brake shields maybe replace the ball bearings?

Kind of depends on what you have done with the brakes and when.

Their parts look great but you can find calipers for much less over here. Try a car parts distributor who supplies to stores and mechanics. There is one near me and I think I paid $65 each rebuilt.

Thanks for the info. I do want to reiterate - I would like to see original pics to determine original color of calibers/shields/etc.

Believe the original calipers were yellow zinc plated which rust pretty easily. They should look very similar to the attached pic below. Not mine! If interested, I can put you in touch with an E24 Alpina enthusiast who refurbishes and rebuilds calipers at very reasonable prices. He is located somewhere near Atlanta, I believe.
