This should be a very simple question for an expert. Does my gas tank go in from the top or from underneath? Pictures I have seen indicate from the top but my old tank has the seal on the top of the tank which means it was underneath.

Upside down tank.

74= bottom. ( But, I assume you're not in Austrailia, mate!)

Sometime late 73 tanks were changed to bottom mounted.

OK my next questions. I have two seals, 16111117053 and 16111117055, both are adhesive. Which is correct?

I just cleaned out the tank on my 91 2800cs and thought I would use a new BMW gasket 16111117053 on the reinstall. What a mistake! The original gasket seemed to be an asphalt based caulk that still sealed well after all these years but not so tight the tank couldn't be removed. The new gasket was a useless piece of 10 mm x 28 mm x 1800 mm foam with a sticky adhesive (paper covered) on one side. I guess it could have worked except it was too short. About 2200 mm of gasket material is needed.

#16111117053 is worthless. I expected better from BMW.

I should have searched the archives and bought some automotive 3M Strip Caulk #8578 at the FLAPS.

Oh well. Live and learn.

I actually lined the flange with Ice and Rain roofing shield and had it hang about 1/4 inch over the flange edge. The stuff is about 1/8 inch thick with a sticky back, basically 3m caulk but a lot wider.. Hanging it over the flange allowed a seal to the tank. I swear the car can float now.
