These 40 year old cars are amazing when in perfect condition (and carefully improved). Rolled off the ferry in Travemunde (about an hour N of Hamburg) at 7.30 this morning. I chose to drive through Germany on a Sunday as there are no trucks permitted on weekends. Until about noon, there is very little traffic, then the family traffic gets going.
A truly outstanding car and very tight and "safe" in cruising speeds of 80-110 MPH. 5-speed box with 3.45 LSD is perfect with the stock 3.0 CSi. 3.25 even better but requires the torque of the 3.5. Michelin XWX 205/70 with 2,1 kg suits the car´s suspension better than the 16" wheels with modern rubber (and I don´t need the better cornering capabilities on the autobahn.
Just keep an eye in the mirror and the distance to cars ahead. Stopped for a break every 2 hrs. The last 150 miles were in Switzerland where there are lots of radars, just 2 lanes and much more traffic on a Sunday afternoon, so that was pure cruising.
This is memory lane for me as my father had one when I was 10-18. He passed away 3 years ago, but it brings back nice memories.
No problem keeping up with the modern Audis, BMWs and Mercedeses. OK, the few Porsches kept a different pace. I´ll admit that.
It´s fun to work on them, but they should be driven as well.
Bye and good night,
Peder
