A 1600GT…

Another 1600GT just went up on BaT, there’s something about these that is quirky but very neat. I do NOT need another vehicle at the moment but have to say it’s tempting. Anyone here owned one and wants to weigh in on the experience compared to the E9 - parts availability, reliability, fun of the experience, etc?

@Dirk has one. I drove the late Chris Auty’s Glass 1700. It was an amazing restoration. It was for sale. I was sorely tempted. But it drove like an economy car.
I hear the BMW version, with a different rear suspension, is far better.

I know of one here in Oregon. I always felt that BMW should have continued this model as a 911 alternative. From a rear 3/4 angle it is very reminiscent of 911/912s of the era. I would imagine the BMW 1600ti drivetrain makes it fun to drive. I was surprised to learn that the 1600GT and the 1600ti sedan are nearly the same weight (2100lbs) so it may not be much different than the ti. But it looks great.

Mohr Imports of Monterey, the seller of the 1600GT currently on BaT, gets some amazing cars. And they have this one listed during the best week for a Monterey-based seller. Be interesting to watch. I too love these things, but don't see owning one.

One year ago during car week. Their tactic works on me.

I saw that blue car at VSR while Mario was working on it. It had just come out of paint and the body work was very nice. Mario was in the process of putting the beautifully restored gauges in it and yes, the dash was amazing. I never saw the finished car.

Well, @Jimmi , as I alluded to in another thread, perhaps somewhat impulsively I made a purchase while here. I had seen the white 1600GT being auctioned and figured would go look at it in person and decide upon whether I’d bid. Went by and they had two in the back, both from the same collector, but had only listed the white one so far. The other one was in somewhat better condition and cooler (to me) color so I made what I considered a fair market direct buy offer which the seller took. I’m somewhat surprised at how low the white one ended up, and that it actually met reserve at that price, but maybe seller figured he had done ok with mine and just was ready to let both go. This one is in near-perfect condition, so unlike the e9 I am NOT planning on any work for it, aside from adding some seat belts since it has none, or pulling the seats to put into storage and putting some new more comfortable seats and belts in there. Seems that seats for a 2002 should fit but I’ll measure.

well, well, well JC. good on you! i love your new purchase. and while i love white cars, this red one has tons of presence.
