Am planning the York for Sanden air conditioning compressor swap. Can't take the hit to the rpm's or the annoying vibrations anymore. It works ok but the York needs new bushings and I don't want to sink any money into it. Do I need a new drier or can I bake it in the oven as I have seen in other posts or will pulling a vacuum for a while remove moisture from it along with the rest of the system? How much will custom hoses cost to have made?

Don't know if this helps.... but the bracket bushings can be made from 1/2" PVC pipe and brass reducers from the local hardware store. Go to the website where the former FAQs were and there is detailed instructions. That's what I did. No noise.

Hoses shouldn't be a big deal. Figure out how and where to charge from. At the compressor like the York or nearer to the dryer. The important part of the compressor is how the lines come out and if 90 degree fittings will be required.

Delete the rattle can noise reducer.

Dryers are available. I prefer the one with a sight glass.

I figured you had a solution but I have decided to get that York out of there before it gives up the ghost anyway.

I definitely want the charge ports in a more accessible location so as to not suffer 3rd degree burns when servicing. I suppose I should mount the compressor and then bring it to a shop for them to custom fit the hoses and ports? I can do the evac/charging myself as I just did an R-12 deal on Craigs list.

My drier has a sight glass now, shall I seek OEM or is there a Mercedes or generic equivalent?

The single best improvement to my A/C was doing your heater bypass mod - amazing difference in temperature both of the vents and less heat soak into the cabin.

I would study the types of connections available, There are many. Many. Hose can be bought at any auto parts store. So, you can dry fit everything, then just have a shop or auto parts do the connections for you.

If you take it somewhere, you run the risk they won't pay much attention as to the best way to future access and service.

The most important part is the compressor and how the connections are arranged. top or rear. There are shorter compressors now. At any rate, the most common coming off the compressor is a 90 degree fitting ( some with combo charge port) turned forward to the radiator. This also means the hose routing is longer since they too must turn 90 degrees back towards the dryer. I prefer the charge port near the dryer!

Glad to hear about the mod. Haven't changed mine yet... still enjoying the windows being down, the Raybans, and Pink Floyd turned up real loud.:)

Welcome To The Machine? Except he's riding around in his Jag-u-ar.

Pink Floyd turned up real loud.:)

I use the a/c for the brief times I am on the hiway, it's still windows down around town - at least for another few weeks.

Thanks for the advice on the layout - I will source and dry fit it all then get someone to do the fittings.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Ahhh.... youth is a state of mind. Time to wax up the board.

pack the bowl ...

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far. Shine on you crazy diamond. Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there. Shine on you crazy diamond. And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph, and sail on the steel breeze. Come on you boy child, you winner and loser, come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!

yep ... i'm a fan too

That song was playing on the radio just today as I was driving down the road... great one.

BTW, the A/C recondition and re-config you are planning would be a most helpful resource if documented with photos. Not just for DIY use but for the edification of A/C pros who don't know the coupe. Extra work, I know, but I don't think such a photo-guide exists here yet.

And what is the heater bypass?

I plan to document this project because you are right, there is a lack of info other than "such and such will fit with the right bracket" etc. I am researching/tracking down the compressor and bracket now - I am trying to do this without dropping a lot of coin in the process and is definitely DIY oriented. Hopefully others here can use for their needs.

The mod per 61Porsche is to bypass the heater's hoses at the firewall with a fitting (I used a brass 1" elbow from Lowes with existing clamps to mate the upper and lower hoses) - here in the South we don't get but a few days where heat is needed. With the bypass the boiling coolant stays out of the heater box in the dash so it doesn't soak up heat - big difference. It takes maybe 5 minutes to do, provided your hoses come off easlily. I also capped the ends to the heater box.

Heater by-pass

For those us who live near the subtropic, a simple way to increase your a/c efficency is to by pass your heater.

Find a suitable size and length of copper pipe( I use 1/2" by 3", a 90 will work too) remove the hoses from the heater at the bulkhead, join the hoses with the pipe being careful to orient the hoses for maximum flow, clamp, and top off your coolant.

Less heat next to your evaporator, less heat in the cabin, cooooler a/c.

You'll have to sweet talk Steve on the photo essay.
