I have made a substantial effort to revive the a/c system on my e9.

I don't know much about a/c systems but after wading in I figured out enough to get it working again.

I'm nearly there. New compresoor, new condenser, new dryer, all new hoses and last but not least a new expansion valve. Which all of you know requires the removal of the evaporator.

Now with a fresh R12 charge everything works. Everything, that is, except the temp control switch on the dashboard. . Nothing happens when you turn it so the a/c compressor never cycles and stays on all the time.

Anyone know where I can find a new temp control dial/switch. Or perhaps sugest how to repair the one I have.

Thanks,

Temp

Thats what the expansion valve does is cool and shut it off
thats most likely is wrong
to test shoot carb cleaner should shut it off

there is a hex screw on the back that adjusts when the compressor cycles, may want to turn it end to end and experiment if that frees it up. I don't remember if these can be pulled apart for cleaning, if you have pics of it out of the dash when adjusting the hex screw then post them.

Temp control switches are readily available with the Mercury filled tube that must be inserted into the evap coils through a tiny hole. You can barely see it from passenger side with side panel removed. It is also an on/off switch that sends power to the fan switch and then on to the compressor and the relay for the condenser fan. New switches are not metric so be sure it has the thin nut to mount it, it's extra fine thread. Hole in console panel might need to ne enlarged a bit too.

First make sure the end connector on the sw hasn't come loose when placed back. Reported problem sometimes.

I'd check the relay, the screw that grounds through the inner fender. Then check the connections/ pin out. Another suspected item that I had once. There's a wiring diagram in the repair manual in the retrofitting a/c section.

That doesnt look like it will fit? Here's what mine looks like (sorry, only pic I have), circled is the adjustment screw:

BMW also still lists them but looks like the one on eBay.
