Hello everyone
Vince, 28, from France, student,
My grand father sold me this beautiful 3.0 CSI 5 years ago. first project was to just start the car but more i take things apart, and more i see big issues (picture below). Finally, i decided to do some paint job and a big restoration project. I'd love to take it out once a week or more. like a "daily" car.

Took my time to dissasemble it, i used to work on old minis but i have to say bmw is another level, good quality car.
I always dream take my grand dad out for a ride in this beauty but he passed away last year... difficult moment for me, and i need some time to regain motivation... but this is it ! it is time to rebirth the beast !

first start last month, promissing !!! paint job incoming... maybe september !

thanks to this forum, i had some good advice and i think it is time for me to say "thank you" to all of you, who, without knowing it, save me a lot of time, or help me...

Trying to search some good alpina 16" rims repro like "coupe king" alloy rim, in 7 and 8J. maybe someone here have some for sale...

Hello Vincent! Nice to meet you! I bought my coupe twelve years ago and the very first problem I needed to solve was that same plugged up coolant passage, just like yours. And yes, the housing broke off in the hose just like that. The replacement I found was from an E28 I believe.

It took a few years of commuting with it and then taking off the road to work on it before it became as reliable as my other cars, but it did. Rebuilding the fuel system is a terrific idea. I bet your brake calipers want attention too after all that time sitting!

Was pretty surprised when I saw that coolant plug
Don’t know exactly what it is, certainly a mix of aluminium oxyde and some coolant « Cristal »

I did some « terrific » job as you said
New fuel lines , new fuel tank , new pump, new brakes, brake line check with pressure and clean , new silicon brake fluid, new master cylinder brake and clutch etc …
New injectors , new valves and springs etc…

Hope it will be as reliable as yours one day !! Had some trouble with electronics ?

If someone also sell some electric front windows …

Great picture of your grandfathers (now your) coupe in the garage with all the dust from lack of use! It is great that you have his prized BMW and will have lots of time to enjoy it.

Yes, and impossible to find the correct design in Europe
I think I have to take some coupe king rims but with taxes, they are not very cheap
If someone have a set for sale, it will be very nice

paint job take some time
difficult to find someone haha

anyway , i was so happy to take it for a spin yesterday . It was a hard journey for me... many parts , many problems...
i admit i had a little tear when i touch the road with it... 40 years after, back to business !! no exhaust and an idle too high but .... whoa ...

come to you to see if someone can help me about that idle
maybe someone can sell me a pdf version of the blue book or at least, the electonical part ?
i was searching for the resistance value for thermo time switch and ther component...

The paint looks great. You've done so much work on it!

There are some resources on this site that might be helpful. They are all found here.

There are also a number of resources online for diagnosing and fixing problems with your D-jet fuel injection system.

This article is specifically about Volvos, but it serves as a great overview of how everything works.


Then there's the Jetronic site that is very comprehensive. It includes a chapter on each part of the D-Jet system, tips on diagnosing and repairing issues, and a test checklist that can help keep track of everything while your doing diagnostics. His main area of expertise is Mercedes, but the focus of the site is quite broad covering most all of the manufacturers that used D-Jet over the years.

i already knew some of this ressources and i read them with care as i am a complete noob in term of injection...
in theory, this look simple but in practice... not the same !

actually i have theses problems :
- engine idle too high (with fuel pressure correct)
- when i disconnect cold injector during warming of the engine, idle goes higher
- cold injector stay on when connected with thermo time switch ( goes off if i disconnect the cable)
- auxillary air device seems stuck

i wanted to test all my temp sensor and in particular thermotime switch to be sure all of them are correct ... and if not replace them.
but i dont know resistance value with temperature... if someone has this type of info (like a tablature with all the value), i will be very grateful :D. It seems difficult to find
maybe in the blue book but ?... not sure...
 
my grand dad had 4 wolfrace wheels on it. with good polish, the car was astonishing (according to my father) cant wait to see it with new tires and new wheels but a set of staggered alpina will be ultimate goal !

Here are a couple of simple mechanical things to check in case you haven't:

1) Have you tried adjusting the idle control screw located below the throttle body?

2) Also you might check that the throttle valve mechanism is correctly adjusted.

- auxillary air device seems stuck
You can pull the little air filter off the auxiliary air device and look inside it. You can see the position of the valve. When the car is fully warmed up it should be closed. I just tested mine off the car and it's supposed to be closed at 70C. The opening in the valve got much smaller, but there still was a bit of a gap that would let some extra air in. I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. I had a hard time keeping the water that hot for very long so this might have been part of the cause. (I didn't want to have my wife come home and find me boiling car points on the stove...)

I already work on finding solution
I dismantle the system with AAD , temp sensor and thermo time switch
For the moment, i don’t want to touch idle screw , I didn’t touch it and I assume it was in correct position when the car was running
But I will certainly look throttle switch and mechanism

For AAD , according to the first site , it seems ok if AAD is not fully closed at optimal temperature, air flow just need to be tight
This is not my case, i will try ultrasound cleaning , hopefully it will help
(Unlike you , my wife saw me in the kitchen , boiling it up and she just lift her eyes in the air with a « pfffff »)

For some reason , I wasn’t able to open this section in my computer … so thanks again !!

hello everyone
with lot of patience, AAV seems to work fine after some ultrasonic cleaning
reduce fuel pressure in the line (3.5 bar ????!!) to 2.2 bar
still some problem with thermotime switch , if someone as a spare which work ... i'll take it , otherwise i will take one new from bosch
throttle valve mechanism seems ok with minor adjustement
depression sensor seems to work fine but i only done a depression test with my mouth and tongue

still this idle too high , i am going to get a strombo lamp and verify ignition first of all

little by little... but i think victory is near !
