A Tale of Two Grills

When we purchased our 1970 2800cs it came with a bunch of extra stuff, some of which is actually for the car, some is other BMW (Bavaria, et al).

So, I have two kidney grills - one is all metal (aluminum?); the other has a metal perimeter shell and plastic slats. They are both the same approximate size & shape.

I'm guessing that the all metal one is correct for the car, but what is the other one from?

Thanks for your help,

I was told that the legendary blumax was friendly and wise. Fortunately for us his knowledge was captured for all time...

During the first two model years or three--all E-9's coming to the USA were originally fitted with anodized aluminum kidney grills--some of you call them chrome--this changed to the black slat type at about mid-year production in 1973 for US bound Coupes--don't know for Euro models. Since then some confusion has followed with the belief that only CSL's were authorized to sport the black slat grills--remember NO CSL's were ever officially imported to the US by Hoffman Motors and many of you admit to having the black slats--all CSL's have found their way to these shores by individual sponsorship--many by armed forces members returning--especially pilots--since their incomes were higher--ya know flight pay and all--so buying one was easier.

Early E-9's were all fitted with chromed plastic hood/bonnet and side grills--mixed chrome/black was not a stock thing--athough some owners have chosen this mix--perhaps durability entered in as chromed plastic did not have a long life.

Along the way someone decided that black grills were cheaper to produce, and the fact that chromed plastic did not fare well in many climates and were also more expensive as original equipment and to replace. Black looked good especially on silver/white and some other lighter colors--however--few of the darker cars wore black unless an owner passed on the chromed ones due to their being more pricey.

As a practical matter the black ones can be easily re-finished to as new, whereas not so with the chromed plastic.

Does the black slat one have 4 slats or 5 on each kidney? If 4 then it's for a '74 and later I believe.

grilles

Yeah, Murray was talking about kidney grilles and their black or not black finish, then changed to talk about hood and side (vent) plastic grilles, and their black or chrome finish on plastic...plastic slats on a kidney grille probably means a later, other model BMW...pretty sure all e9's had all aluminum grilles, as mentioned just above...

OK, Three Kidneys

Here's a pic of the 3 grills that I have.
If I understand what I've read, all E9s came with all-aluminum grills, the early ones were shiny all over, the later ones had black slats.
so it looks like I have 1 early one, 1 late one & 1 from some other model.
The late one has the inner portion of the outer frame black - is this how it is supposed to be?

I just saw this http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20191
so I guess that the one with plastic slats is for an E3

In MY 74 coupes got the fatter grille with four black slats. All earlier coupes had five alu slats and the CSL had five black alu slats. That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

The 5 slat black one appears to have been painted. Only the slats should be black, and CSL's were annodized black not painted I think.

5 black slats were for the CSL cars

and 5 alu slats were for the rest. In late 73/early74 this was changed to 4 slats with a thicker frame, for God knows what reason. These are the ones available today.

To add to the 'intrigue'. I have a copy of the September 2011 issue of 'Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car' magazine. There is an article in it about a 1974(or 75) 3.0 CS that was bought by a woman (Violet Brown) from a dealer in the Santa Ana CA area (not named), which is #434 of the 455 sold in the US from 1/74 through 12/75 (according to the article). The woman rarely drove the car, as it had less than 4,500 miles on it when the current owner bought it from her.

The current owner is Donnie Crevier whose father founded Crevier BMW in Santa Ana in 1971 (their dealership had none in stock when Ms Brown came to purchase an e9). Donnie worked at his father's dealership and kept track of the car over the years, finally convincing Ms. Brown to sell this 'time capsule' to him in 1995 - by committing to keep it in his 'collection of cars' so people could see it in the future. The magazine article authors were allowed to drive the car for a few miles for their 'story'. That was apparently the only time it had been driven since Mr. Crevier bought it. There are several pictures of the car, and guess what - the grille has a chrome surround with black slats - FIVE of them! (The surround looks to be chrome, but may be highly polished Aluminum).

SO - is it 4 slats, or 5 slats? Are they black or chrome? Might just depend on which bin Hans pulled it from after his drink from the beer bottle as the car was going past on the assembly line! (I toured the factory in 1982, and every workbench had open beer bottles on it).

PS: Here is a link to the article I referenced that has apparently been cut out of the magazine:

I have seen Donnie's 74 coupe, last time around 8 years ago at the HB Concours. It should have four black slats, Alu surround, they were never chrome.

It is an automatic, 434 out of 451, built Dec 1974. No silver grilles were around for Hans to pull from. :)

Since the link has been published, thought I'd add one more 'item'. Here is the last sentence in the article:

"It was a special car for the discriminating few, just as much today as it was then."

OK, everybody swell up with a little pride about your discriminating taste! I can claim a bit of it, both Noq, and THEN! - HA.

PS: Bluecoupe30!, I think you hit it on the head with that comment! Well done. I was a bit concerned about BMW's after my tour and seeing all the engine builders with their beer bottles within arms reach!

And it was around $17K then!

Grilles for both e3 and e9 are the same. I think if you order 51131801604 which was silver you will get 51131826809 which is black, $353. Peder is an expert on these and I trust his statements.
