Adapting electronic speedo with Getrag 265

Hi all,

I will be taking a Getrag 265 with electronic pick up out of what appears to be a euro 733. I can also get the speedo out of the car. Is it possible to adapt the internals of an electronic speedo in the housing and with the face of a cable speedo? I'm asking this as it may be easier than converting the transmission to cable gears. If yes, should I just get the speedo or is there any other electronics I should take out of the car? If yes, where is it located?

Thanks in advance!

As I recall, the speedo signal in the electronic cars is from the differential, rather than the transmission. So, you would need to fab up an appropriate bung on the output side of the differential somewhere, like on a wheel hub or half shaft.

As for swapping the guts of the speedo, I am not so sure. The gauges are different diameters, and depending on the year of the vehicle, the speedo is integrated into the cluster board, rather than being a discrete, swappable unit. You will also lose your odo reading, unless you manually change it during this operation.

If the unit is a Getrag 265, then there should just be a blocker plate or cover over the hole for the speedo sender gearshaft. You can use the gearshaft from any M30 mechanical speedo trans as far as I know, including the 4 speeds. They aren't that hard to come by. It would probably be easier to source these components than try to sub in the electronic speedo.

Hum.... I'm now wondering if I should not wait to get a Getrag 265 with the gears installed already. How rare are they compared to the ones without speedo Gears?

GGR,

The Euro 733s came with the speedo case; those equiped with 5 speeds. Anything is possible after all these years, I suppose. I would reconfirm. Can you tell what year?

If it does have the plug, pull it, and insert your speedo gear.

If the speedo is electronic, it does get the signal off the diff.

E23 speedo

Originally there was a `taxi kit` available from BMW for converting the E23 from electronic to cable as the taxi meters were cable driven. Maybe you can still buy it ?

I'm positive the speedo is electronic. It's written on it and as the cluster was loose I put my hand behind it and couldn't feel any cable nor any place where it would bolt in.

I've no idea of the year. Are they any clue on how to recognise years?

Do you mean that even if it's an electronic speedo the trans may have the speedo case? Where is the plug? I did not lift the car. I could just see the bottom of the trans enough to confirm it is a detacheable bellhousing and had the added section for the 5th. So I may have to feel the plug with my hand if it's higher up. So where should I put my hand and what should I feel?

I saw some pictures on the web and on one I see something on the back cover that may be the speedo cable pick up. it is on the left side, pointing down, at the back. Is that it? (see first attached picture)

I also saw other pictures that did not seem to have this but had a third anchoring point for the trans in the back like the two forks on the side (see second attached picture). I saw that third anchoring point on the trans in the JY. Would that mean it doesn't have the plug?

In case that thrans doesn't have the speedo case, would the cases from a 2002 trans fit?

I read on another forum that this kit is quite pricey new, several times the price of the the trans at the JY. I may try and get the gears out of a junked 2002.

Thanks for the help!
