Crap day all around. First, the glass install guys (50 yrs exp between the two of them) managed to tear my rubber seal while installing the windshield. Then, about 5 hours after they gave up for the day, a tiny chip along the lower edge of the windshield turned into a stress fracture... and then crack. The chip was there prior - i saw it 3 years ago when i took the car apart for paint - and was still only a chip when the install guys left, but the crack happened tonight at some point while moving it to a 'safe' corner of the garage. so i cant place blame on the shop, even though im pretty confident the two failed install attempts today sealed its fate - they were working it and the seal pretty good trying to get it in. At this point i just want new glass and to forget this ever happened.

so much for paying the 'pros' to do it...

So... anyone know if max imports, penske or tomkinson actually stock and ship windshields? or do they have to get them from the fatherland?

thanks

shipping is a MAJOR issue with windshields ... i don't believe that tomkinson or penske will ship them, and even if they did, freight would be a killer. check with your closest dealer ... if there is an issue with fit, its easier to deal with.

so ordered a windshield from bmw towson. just north of $500 for the glass + shipping. Its the green tinted version. Preferred the clear but it had a lead time of 2-4 weeks from germany. Might still go ahead and get it as well and keep it on hand for a swap later or just a spare.

Anyone have a picture of the green glass? guessing it isn't too noticeable?

yep - tomkinson is only 400 bucks ... but its a long drive to indiana from MD. surprised they are charging you shipping. most dealers don't do that when they charge you list.

Not sure this helps at all but I just replaced the windshield in my '73 2002 with a Pilkington brand. Green tint, which was recommended by other 2002 guys, and it went right in with a good fit. Someone said that the BMW glass is Pilkington with a BMW logo instead. Can't confirm it but wouldn't be surprised. I got the windshield from a local glass guy for $100, he delivered to my work (at no charge) and I installed it myself.

pilkington is a super high quality architectural glass company.

Had the glass installed yesterday. Everything went in without a hitch and looks great. Almost happy it happened now because the new glass, along with the new paint, makes the car look showroom new.

Thanks for everyone's input!
