A couple questions:

Opinions on the material along top of fenders in engine compartment
During a repaint, should I remove it and leave it off?
What can it be replaced with if I wanted to replace it?

I can’t seem to find the correct category on the online parts book ordering to find the foam insulation on the firewall engine compartment, any hints?

Thanks

There is some material being used by Don on a couple of restorations in progress at his shop. I think he even showed me the raw material.

If the repaint includes the engine bay you want to remove it and put a new one. I think the body color paint was not applied under it at the factory, just white primer, but I may be wrong. For a body respray I would not remove it.

I am not touching mine, who knows what skeletons may come out of that closet...

Others can chime in and describe skeletons they found.

for the sound insulation at the firewall - look at section 51 - body trim on penskeparts.com - see attached pix

If you want the top fender and other insualtion contact Christoph Bier in Germany. He sells occasionally on eBay as Chrissi7 but has a catalogue of NLA stuff available from repro insulation, trunk pieces, etc. His email address is [email protected] and he will send you the catalogues (he speaks English).

He is also a manager of the German e9 club www.bmw-coupeclub.de and also included a few items from them along with the part.

I have bought from him.

Still available from BMW, you just need to cut it to the proper shapes. OCCoupe has the part number, it was used up through e28 I believe.

Hi Thanks, I will see what I can find from OCCoupe, the parts books online say NLA, but maybe that is pre-shaped
